Default How to determine if XJS has lacquer finish?

I recently (2 days ago) acquired a '90 XJ-S convertible in signal red and noticed some dings I'd like to get repaired. I thought I'd try bringing it to a paintless ding removal expert, but he said I need to determine if it is lacquered or not, otherwise when they try to massage the dings out, the finish will literally just fall right off.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

You'll have to find out what Jaguar was using as a factory paint then - 2 part (color, clear) acryllic enamel and I don't think lacquer was still used by manufacturers at that time.

I agree with Rogers. Lacquer was well on it's way out in the early 80's, I can't imagine the factory would be using it on a 90's car.

I think you will find the paint is enamel with no clear coat. My car is the same colour and is definitely enamel. When I touched up a spot with acrylic lacquer is wrinkled.

Btw the Jaguar colour code for signal red is CFC.

A good PDR person should get small dents out ok. The paint can be heated with gun to soften so it does not crack.

Acrylic enamel. A typical spot repair would probably done with a urethane, either enamel or base/clear.

Take a bit of white cloth with some rubbing compound, the least abrasive one you can hold of. In a clean not very visible area of the car but on the outside, rub gently. If it's goes red then it's single stage if the cloth doesn't then it's clear coated.
