Default How do I wire up this Water Pump?

Hi Guys

While going round a 'Yard Sale' today I had an amazing find, which was a Brand New Crompton Parkinson/Stuart Turner Water Pump which I am intending to use for washing the underside of my XJS

Except for one small problem and that's the mind blowing instructions on how to wire it up!

Where as I expected there were only 3 Terminals and I managed to find the earth one, which just left me with 2 where one would be the positive and the other one the negative

'I mean how hard can it be?'

The Instructions on how to wire it really made my head spin, so please could someone kindly explain how to do this

240Volt Brand New Crompton Parkinson Water Pump but how do I wire it up?

On the Left is a Black and a Yellow Wire and on the Right is a Blue and a Red Wire but which Terminal is the Positive and which Terminal is the Negative?

These are the Wiring Instructions that came with the Pump which to a non electrician like me, is really making my head spin as all I really want to know is which Terminal is the Positive and which Terminal is the Negative

It's alternating current so it will work either way round.
But don't take my word for it!
Maybe it will suck instead of blow if you cross connect the wires.

Hi Steve

I can't believe that they can make a simple job like putting two wires on a motor look so complicated, why couldn't they just put + or - like everybody else

While what you're saying is making sense, I'm hoping that electrical genius 'Warrjon' will chip in just in case I burn the motor out, as although it looks a bit rusty, it was brand new and still in the box

And probably cost over £100 which was quite bit more than the fiver I paid for it

It is AC so there is no Positive and Negative.

Is there a capacitor on the motor, being a single phase motor it will need a capacitor to start. Who drew the diagram because the RH diagram does not have a capacitor shown so I would expect the motor would not start if wired like that.

I would wire it as per the LH diagram with the capacitor.

Hi Warrjon

I copied the Wiring diagram off a tiny little label inside the Terminal Box, where by process of elimination I am guessing that the Capacitor is those two horizontal lines on the Blue Wire on the Left Hand diagram

I've just double checked the drawing and there is no Capacitor on the Right Hand diagram but goodness knows why they had to include such a complicated diagram for those like me who are not electricians

Just putting + or - would have been so much easier to follow

Thanks for your help which as always is appreciated

P.S. Haven't yet made a start on the CD Player, as I'm still playing catch up with non car related jobs but will get in touch as soon as I do

Because AC does not have + and - you can swap Line and N and the motor will still rotate the same way, unlike a DC motor.
