how to test temp sensor?

how to test temp sensor?
So i got my aux fan out and plugged it in....and it works. Unfortunate because I looked forward to putting a better fan in but its money in my pocket.
I DID test it before multiple times and using multiple grounds and it didn't work.
So Im not very good with electrics and don't know where to go from here. If the fan comes on when the temp sensor in the water pump tells it to, how do i test that without the sensor being in a "ON" condition?
I know how to check the relay and the in-line fuse but how do i check that sensor to make sure its working? Now is the best time since the shroud and fans are out.
thanks jagforums, you are always helpful.

Disconnect the wires from the fan switch and join them together. If the fan works then the circuit is OK....but, alas, you still don't know if the switch is working.
The switch should close (complete the circuit) at about 200ºF. If the engine gets well over that temp (as evidenced by the reading from one of those hand held infra-red thermometers) and the fan doesn't work then it can only be the switch....becuase you've already verified that the fan and circuit is operational a couple minutes ago :-)
Or.....
Remove the switch and suspend the business enf in a pan of water on the stove. Use a thermometer to watch the temp increase and when it hit around 200º use a multi-meter (or simple continuity tester) to determine if the switch closes.
Cheers
