Default howling sound

Hi there,

It appears like howling sound from differential area or transmission (hard to identify) during low speed driving (automatic first gear) and it's quite loud to hear seating inside with windows closed. The sound disappears as she accelerates (or may be I can't hear it) and everything goes fine and smooth like there is no any problem.

(1995 convertible)

It would be nice to meet any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

reedreed,

See if the noise happens in second as well as first gear. Put the transmission in first gear lockout and then see if it still happens when you start from rest.

If it does, which says that the noise is happening in more than one gear, then my guess would be that it's more likely to be the differential than the transmission. The bearings can wear in the diff, although I wouldn't expect the noise to disappear as you get faster.

You might need to get someone to put the car up on a lift and then run the car to diagnose it.

Good luck

Paul
