ignition key
hello,Can anyone help please.I bought a 1984 xjs no keys for car.can i pull ignition switch and take it to a locksmith that does automotive keys? i was told it was just a regular key not security chip key?also is there more than one key or does one key fit ign, door and trunk?
Correct, not a chipped key.
Any locksmith should be able to fix you up.
Originally there were three keys: ignition, door/trunk/glove box, and valet. As I recall the valet ket opening the doors only, not the glove box or trunk. They usually get lost or are discarded.

Ignition keys works only the ignition.
The second key works doors, trunk, and glove box.
Forget about the third 'valet' key; everyone else does. It isn't necessary.

well so much for that i got a key made for my glove box and thats all it fits.doesnt fit trunk or door.cant believe there are separate keys for door trunk and glove box and ign.the glove box is double sided.not sure about trunk , and door anyone have any ideas??
on my '92 l have 1 Ford type key for the ignition, glove box and boot 'trunk' and 1 flat Jag style key for the doors and fuel cap. Oh and the green valet key.

Maybe some of the locks have been changed, or damaged?
Or...and this is a stretch....perhaps the glove box lock cylinder is made with fewer tumblers than the other locks? Some older GM cars were made that way. The keys req'd six cuts because the lock cylinders had six tumblers...except the glove box which had only four. So if a key was made for just the glove box it wouldn't have enough cuts to operate the other locks.
If this was the case, though, I'd think the locksmith would've mentioned something.
I'd remove all the cylinders and take 'em to the lock smith and let hime sort it out.

If your 1984 is like my 1985 - which it will be I think - you will have three separate keys:
Door
Ignition
Boot
They are all normal keys, no chips etc etc. That is for sure.
No idea which locks the glove box as I have never tried, figuring I would rather any thief opened it the normal way than ruined the door!

there are only 3 keys on a new 1984 xjs, there are potentially 6 on a 30 year old car if you count the gas cap,
buy a new ignition switch & stick a remote locking conversion on it, probable the cheapest way out

Thanks rgp.thats what i thought.but the glove box key i had made (looks just like your door and boot key) will fit my trunk but wont turn lock.its double sided.but i was told isnt long enough not enough cuts.doesnt go in my doors.they should be like your door key.im going to try taking out door lock and have key made see if it will open boot..thanks for the pic.
If you feel handy get a hammer and a punch go under the dash there are two bolts that are designed too snap off when torqued in place . Lay on your back slide the seat back and use the hammer and punch too direct the stud in a counter clockwise motion its a real pain in the *ss your forearms will scream at you but you'll get it off hard sharp raps on it you can use a srew driver if its the right size. Bring it in too the lock smith and let him make a new key! Or two
im assuming you mean taking out the ignition key switch?if so I have had a key made for ign. Thanks for info though..my problem is being able to get into trunk.im thinking if i make door key it will fit trunk..so i can put battery in and try to start car.
well thanks for everyones input. It was helpful..
I managed to order some auto jigglers to try and pick trunk lock.they worked it only took about 2 min and i unlocked trunk. Its amazing how easy it was.found everything that came with car new even original jag ad from 1984 owners manual jack and jack tools.and brand new spare tire and matching wheel.
Now i can drain gas and get car running.hopefully.
