Default Incomplete XJS. What's it worth?

Hi All,
I had a look at another XJ-S last week.

It has a Chev small block engine and 5 speed Supra box. It also has Simmons wheels 3 of which are missing centre caps 2 are clearly bent and all are heavily soiled with brake dust (which can eat into alloy).

It has also taken out a brick mailbox so the TWR fibreglass front bumper is smashed and the support is in a bad way so is the drivers side front guard.

The paint is completely stuffed and the bonnet has had a slot cut across it for clearance which is covered by a fibreglass bulge which is blended by cracked filler.

The seller wants to keep his SBC and 5 speed which is fine by me. He also wants to keep the wheels.

The car does not appear to have any rust but there is cracking on the boot floor under the LPG tank. Who knows how much filler is under the very bad paint job.

The interior is quite nice black and red velour.

He fist stated that he wanted $2.5K for the car less engine gearbox and wheels but came down from that a bit when I told him that I bought a complete original XJ-S for only a few hundred more than that.

What would this thing be worth as an incomplete car? Located in Australia BTW.

Thanks & regards, Jim...

Run, don't walk unless the all following statements are true:

- you are a masochist
- you are a master mechanic
- you have a shop, lift, and tools
- you have access to an engine and transmission
- you have fabrication skills
- the car is free

That might be worth $500 in Canada.

I'm thinking about it for parts. The interior is better than mine and a nicer colour, it would have a manual pedal box (always desirable) & I have a pair of HE bumpers for mine but no HE reo bars and although the front one on this is not great it might straighten out OK.

Apparently the TWR front bumper cover is in a couple of pieces but being fibreglass it is repairable so a TWR body kit might also look good on my car.

Regards, Jim...

Jim,

There's a lot of time, effort and dedication gone into making it that bad. It'll take a shed load of money to reverse the process.

Forget all about this week and go look for another one next week.

Jim, if you are just buying it for the pedal box and interior, then buy it for whatever you think those are worth. Before you commit though, factor in towing to your place. Chances are that a scrap metal merchant will collect it without charging you once you are done with it, and they may even give you a hundred or two, but I'd suggest that scrap metal is sadly all that (most of) this car is good for.

For our US and UK brethren, XJSs aren't especially cheap here. You might get a runner for as low as $5000, but it will be rough and/or questionable. A reliable runner is more the $15-20k mark (and we aren't talking concourse here, just a maintained example), and an exceptional one is probably pushing $30k. I'm always amazed at how cheap these are elsewhere in the world, so have a look at carsales.com.au to see what we have to pay for one. On the plus side, we never salt our roads!

I bought an XJ-S with V12 and all crud it had with it for only €800 - just to part it out! And that looked in better condition than that above!

Turn around and RUN!

There are loads for sale...

It's a breaker, end of story. Even the chap in the second photo is trying to hide his face!

Why are people saying "Run"?

I'm looking at it as a parts car nothing more. I just don't think that a parts car is worth as much as he is asking especially when the only parts of it that I REALLY want are the bumper supports and the headlight brackets.

Then again I don't think that HE bumpers are worth $500+ each but some ebay sellers do.

He wanted about $4,700 for it as a complete car and about $3,000 for the engine and box if he removed them.

No idea why people are telling you to run Jim, unless they think you are contemplating a restoration. From my read of your first post, you weren't looking to restore, but just to grab a few bits off the car.

Carefully tally up the parts you'd want, check the car again to make sure those parts are serviceable, and base your offer on that. Then send what's left to Jaguar heaven.

Oxymoron why because it is not natural vinyl ie leather? or the colour scheme? The woodgrain inside is near perfect.

These things are not a dime a dozen in Australia which is why mine involved a 20 hour drive to pick it up so ANY parts car nearby is worth checking out.

My Daily driver has leather seats in this climate it sucks big time. Freezing in winter to sit on and hotter than hell in summer.

The car that I really want for parts is a rust bucket 60 miles up the road. Why? because it runs & has HE wheels.

Jim...

Don't be dissuaded, Jim. Again, if you can buy the whole corpse for what the parts are worth (to you), then go for it!

If you come across a decent set of 16" wheels I'd be keen to hear about them

It's a bit hard to judge given your location. As Dave says if you need the parts, you need the parts - essentially its worth it to you and being in OZ, as you say they are rare.

In the UK you would be given a low scrap value for it, then again everything is damp and mouldy over here so it would have been reclaimed by mother earth long ago looking at the condition of it in the photo.
