Default Installing facelift undertray BEC14385

Hello guys,

After waiting for a very long time, I was finally able to obtain a new old stock undertray for my XJS. The diagram shows that I need two air ducts and several nuts a washers. I do see that someone is selling the busts on eBay but I was wondering if anyone has used regular parts store hardware to attach the undertray.

Thanks !

The undertray fixings are fairly simple being a series of spring nuts and then a combined self-tapping screw/washer. From memory, two of the self-tappers (the ones in the domed central parts) go into a part of the underbody, not into the spring nuts. The spring nuts are just fitted around the outer edges of the tray.

Both of those should be available through parts / diy stores, certainly a set of stainless self-tappers would be easy to find and you could use separate stainless washers. The spring nuts are a bit more specific but you shouldn't have too much problem finding a suitable fit.

Good luck

Paul

The fitment kit on e-bay is $22.50 with shipping. I'd just pay that to get it right the first time with the proper parts and no "guess work" I'll pretty much assure you your going to pay half that at the hardware store and have twice the frustration then if you just get the proper kit....just my $.02

I went to my local home depot and got some large fender washers, 1/4" bolts, 1/4" spring nuts and installed them in place of my factory set up. The front edge my undertray dropped down and was scraping the road while on the interstate. Rather loud and I thought I had seriously lost some major parts. Put it all back together with locktite. It won't be coming apart any time soon. The large fender washers top and bottom provides more surface area than the original washer and screw to securely support the undertray and makes a more rigid assembly.

Well; one of the reasons I did not want to use the 22 dollar OEM kit is because most of our cars 94/96 are missing this part. I would hate to just leave it on the side of the road after so much grief to get it! I don't know how the cars end up without it but I don't think its just because the car is so low to the ground. Either way I am going to be tackling this as soon as I get the brake ducts so that I can have her set up as she should be

Neither of my cars have them. What is the purpose of the undertray? Is it just to flow air under car?

It helps make the lower spoiler more rigid. Without it, that spoiler will crack and break when you pull out of a gas station and the curb cut is too steep.

Also protects the delicate oil cooler and other components from getting hit with debris from underneath.

All in all, an important part. With about 12 separate fixings, if it's missing, it's probably likely that owners or garages just haven't bothered putting it back after removing it. In my experience, they can't just fall off.

So I finally got the brake air ducts...they where still available new from Terrys Jaguar (for anyone interested in setting it up themselves)

So all I really need now is to get some washers, bolts and spring nuts and install. I decided that the OEM bolt/washer kit looks a little weak to secure the tray , so I will be using the hardware store.

So I got all the Jaguar branded mounting hardware....and was unable to use most of it. My bumper has been mended so many times and there is so much product in there that I two of the self taping screws don't even need the spring nuts in there as they are held by the density of whatever was used to fix my bumper before. The only way to secure some of the other holes to the front of the bumper was to create new holes and use zippy ties. The only parts that fit properly are the brake ducts and the crossmember screws. Everything else is improvised. Well at least it's there now. Have to say I can't feel as much air scaling from underneath the car now with the aux fans at full blast.

Hi Jonathan;

I could post some pictures, but my car has the facelift bumper. Your undertray is different from mine, and I am not sure if your car has the brake ducts or not.

I think the drivers side on part # 14 is hanging kind of low on my car...
I thought I was scraping this chin spoiler but I just went out and laid on the ground and had a look... no part # 14 in the back is pulled out lower that every thing else...

If you look, the tray should fit into the rubber spoiler and they are fixed together with screws. I replaced as much as possible down there with stainless screws and washers. The little corner bits, 17 l remade with a strip of stainless metal and plastic screws (UK numberplate screws).

I found quite a bit of surface rusting going on, so l took off the grills and anything else that came of and cleaned them up and resprayed everything l could.

Pics from another thread..........

Next job is to take the chrome off and check it over and replace as many screws etc.
