Default Interior lights

Hi re xjs v12 facelift
since car overheated whilst left idling for some time and steam filled engine and bulkhead no interior/courtesy lights work I have no power at door lights or overhead light when I test . any ideas please what to do next

Check the fuse first.

I have an '87, so the comments below refer to the wiring for that car. Might have changed wiring on the facelift...

It's fuse #13 on the aux fuse panel, which is also where the interior light delay unit is located.

Given that all the components involved with interior lighting are in the passenger compartment, it's a mystery that steam in the engine compartment would have been involved.

The interior lighting gets its power from the right terminal post in the engine compartment. If you have power there (just an FYI, that terminal post is NOT fused, so be careful when checking it), then I would see if you have power on the "incoming" (brown wire) side of that fuse. If you do, check the other side of the fuse (purple wire). If nothing there, the fuse is bad.
