Jaguar XJS convertible 1991 fluid top up
The fluid can be purchased on eBay. But if its low, the fluid went somewhere. On my 89, it was the seal on the pump shaft. I added fluid, but before long, it was low again. That seal I also purchased on eBay for 14.00 I think
Having owned several convertibles, ATF was my first thought as well. It even looks like ATF. Yet, after filling my system with ATF, the pump literally bogged right down just as soon as it began to work. So I pulled it back out, drained it, and tried again. No go. Evidently when the lines got ATF in them, the pump simply isn't strong enough to pressurize the cylinders and raise/lower the top. I had to remove the lines and the cylinders, and drain them all. I then installed the correct fluid, which is a aviation grade hydraulic fluid I believe, and the top worked great!
Whatever you do, DON'T put ATF in it.
