Default Jaguar xjs "from right to left"

Hey Folks
Im new at this forum. I have a problem and i`d like to ask you guys for some opinions. So i want to buy this Jaguar XJS 1984 3.6 Oil . Its in UK. The Steering Wheel is on Right side. I made some research on internet. I live in Romania and i need Wheel steer on Left side of the car. So you guys know which parts needed to change for this operation, where to find parts, and costs?

I am sorry to say you should forget the idea. Why not use it in RHD form in your country? Incidentally, the photo you show is a LHD non-UK registered car, so it is not the car you describe !

You will need a new dashboard trim piece, new dashboard loom, new steering rack, maybe new engine/cabin loom, and these are VERY hard to source in mainland Europe or in the UK.

IMHO the only way to even contemplate this (enormous) undertaking would be to have an entire donor car literally alongside the project car so you have access to *everything* needed.

It would be easier and more cost effective to source a good LHD version from somewhere in Europe.

Just my own opinion, but I think you would be opening yourself up to a whole host of work and money that really isn't needed.

At the end of the day, it is your wallet and if that is what you want to do, then the very best of luck in your endeavours.

I hope you're not expecting an easy answer

You'll obviously need, at bare minimum, the dasboard itself and a complete dashboard harness. A LHD brake pedal. Brake lines/pipes. Steering rack. Steering hoses. Handbrake assembly and cables.

Be prepared to sort out some wiring differences as well, as lighting systems vary from market-to-market and LHD vs. RHD.

Labor amount is anyone's guess. I'll throw out a wild guess at 100 hours labor.

Spending more than the market value of the car seems entirely plausible to me.

Cheers

You mentioned the car is in the UK.... whats it like for rust ??

Whats the history of the car ? has it been kept up maintenance wise ? is it in perfect running condition ? (from the pictures it looks a bit ratty, and I see it doesn't have UK plates on it, which mean it's not registered and driven frequently ?

You could already have a huge "to do" list on a UK 1984 car, never mind swapping over the steering wheel.

If you are looking at the RHD to LHD conversion as a way to get your hands dirty and spend time working on the and learning about the car, don't worry..... XJSes, especially old ones, are extremely good at taking your time and money off your hands.

In the end it's your decision, but it's a big job and as others have said, I think the safest (and probably cheapest) way to do it is to get a donor LHD car to pull the parts from. If you get a ratty rusty one it'll definitely end up cheaper than buying the long unknown list of parts you will need. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Don't do it. Maybe one could justify converting an older, simpler car (or MUCH more valuable car) like a Jaguar Mk II, if you already had to tear it apart for a restoration.

We are all afflicted by romantic notions, or we wouldn't drive Jaguars. The key is to ride them out.

P.S. I don't think I have seen teardrops on an XJS before. I don't mind the look. I bet those 215/70-15s make the ride very comfy.

Find a LHD car, there are plenty here in Texas that can be had cheaply and sea freight is not expensive. I've thrown away cars without a bit of rust here whereas if you buy one in the UK, I can guarantee it has rust (either hidden or unhidden).
