Default Just picked up a xjs

The car is in 8.5 out of 10 the speedo odometer does not work, it reads 440000 miles.
I know this is next to impossible the car fax places it at 38000 miles as of 6/2015.
I worked for jag in the 70's- 80's and there is no way this car has that many miles,it unless it had a restoration at some time.
The chrome, paint , trim all are 9 out of 10 the interior is worn but 8-out of 10.

the car runs like a fine tuned watch. passed smog test better than my 5 year old chevy truck.

It does have a small oil leak at the sheet metal oil pan ( I tightened the pan bolts and it slowed down but still a couple of drips when it's parked on a sloped drive way )

Do you think that its possible that a car in this condition could have that many miles?

I have been twisting wrenches for 45 years and in my opinion the 40k miles is more likely what are your thoughts.

BTW the numbers on the odometer are out of alignment.
Question could I take it to a speedo shop and have them fix it and set the speedo to the 40k mark?

Can I post photos and what is the preferred method ?

regards
bill

Very nice, congrats. What's the build date of the car? I would have thought it's a 1991 model year with the classic collection tag on the boot and the darker colored piping on the seats.

I'd certainly believe 44K miles is more accurate, but how would the odometer go to 440K unless someone was messing with it.

The Classic Collection special edition began in 1990.

There is no actual difference between the '90 and '91 model years. Jaguar just kept building the '90 version until the first iteration of a 'facelift' model production came online for the '92 model year.

Also, there are no California 1991 model year XJSs. Can't recall the law change that caused it, but any XJS sold during that year had to be sold as a 1990 regardless of build date. When the '92 model arrived it conformed to the new requirement.

In the state of MN the odometer reading is recorded on the bill of sale / title. If CA is the same they will have recorded the 440000 and changing the odometer now may cause problems down the road if you ever want to sell.

Are you sure the digit on the end doesn't happen to be on a zero right now? It is very obvious that 44k is a logical step from a previous recording from 38k but maybe it is 440k and all a coincidence. You are saying there is NO zero at the far left of the odometer?

The odometer is on the speedo, the speedo is broken, the entire cluster is electronic. IF it does indeed say 440k, then it's probably just from the speedo being screwed up. Roll it back to where you think it should be and fix the speedo, or grab a used one that is working online and roll it to where it should be.

The build date is 9-1990.
the title states 38k miles so the odometer is wrong, I will pull it out and see if I can fix it.

Silly question and please don't take offense but you're not just misreading the decimal point for the tenths are you.

Yes I know that This just the beginning, But I am having fun and using skills that I have not used in 35 years. It's amazing that I still remember working on these beasts so long ago.
I got to test drive the first FI xj 12 when it was released in the us.
I worked for a jag dealer in 1973 also rover, rolls,mg,tr,tvr and alfa.
I fixed them all.

I fixed my speedo/odometer, plus 3 guages and several new idiot lights by removing and re-working all the electrical connections on the back of the cluster where the copper foil traces get corroded by leaking windshields. Link: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...t-work-117268/
