Looking at a 1989 XJS V12 Convertible - What should I look For
I am looking at a 1989 XJS V12 Convertible. It was purchased in CA and now is in SD with one owner and 84k miles. I know nothing about this model and want to know what to look out for or maybe need to know if I should just run.
Thank you
Thank you
Hi jjrdskns,
I just finished refurbishing a '91 convertible with 48K miles. Although the mileage is low many XJS's that old will likely need numerous things. For example, here is the list of items I needed to address ......Oil & filter change, new air filters, new spark plugs, replaced fuel filter. Replaced both oil senders. New sump gasket.
All Brake pads and rotors replaced, new brake hoses, system flush
Intake manifold gaskets and cam cover gaskets replaced
All suspension bushings replaced front & rear, including IRS mounts, front subframe mount bushings, & anti-roll bar bushings
Cooling system flush, new thermostats, new hoses.
Power steering flush, rack seal replaced, new gaiters
Transmission filter & fluid replaced, rear mount bushing replaced
Replaced all drive belts.
Hood struts replaced
Front shocks replaced, new front wheels bearings, replaced ball joints & tie rod ends
IRS fulcrum bearings and rear wheel hub bearings replaced, all IRS seals replaced. Differential oil change
New engine fuel injection lines, injectors cleaned & serviced, injector connectors replaced.
Conversion to Euro E4/E1 headlamps, added HL relays
Repair, replace non working electrical components, lamps, motors. Refurbished Speedo & Tacho
I don't mean to scare you away, these cars are classic and fun to drive. However, but my suggestion is to ask the owner how many of those thing have been recently done, along with the usual driving / functional checks while you are looking over the car.
By the way my car is for sale in AZ, check my listing on the "Marketplace", just search "Very Clean XJ-S". Contact me at ramiller32@me.com, if interested.
Cheers, Richard
