Question Lucas starter adjustment

I have the starter apart off our 87 XJS cleaning it up and replacing the brushes. The pin for the pull in lever is eccentric to provide an adjustment, does anyone know the correct procedure on how to adjust it?

Great care, TIME, thinking. I kid you not.

Its been too many years since I did one.

BUT

You will need a battery, and leads. One to earth of the body of the starter, the other to "flash" the spade terminal to activate the solenoid.
Start with the eccentric so the travel does NOT reach full extension, then adjust minutely until the Bendix JUST touches the end of the snout, and I mean JUST touches. Even a cmall gap would be good.

The Bendix needs to engage, the Ring Gear, of course, but not clash into it. BUT you cant see that happening when installed.

There may be a specfic precodure, but I have never looked, and just done it that way on all of them.,
