Maintenance advice on my new XJS
Hi guys,
I just got my 95 xjs. The previous owner said that he stored it every year for a few months and then took it out of storage in the summer months. I asked him if he ever put a fuel stabilizer or anything when he stored it. He said no. Is there anything I should worry about? Also, what should I do on the car initially? Should I get the tranny fluid changed, and do a full tune up on the car? I don't know much about maintenance but I want to do some preventative maintenance. Thanks for all the advice....

My preference....on any used car, Jaguar or otherwise...is to drive it a few days to make sure no serious issues crop up that might change my mind about owning the car.
Assuming all goes well I do a major service and tune-up: change ALL fluids and lubricants, replace spark plugs, replace all filters, repack wheel bearings, inspect brakes and suspension, replace any suspect hoses and belts.....really go thru the car stem-to-stern. Usually a few repair items are discovered along the way. Plug wires, brake pads, shocks...whatever.
Of course, if records prove that some of the services were recently done, they can be skipped. Otherwise, do 'em all now and get it over and done with....and establish a new "square one" from which future routine servicing will be needed.
Others will chime in.
Cheers

Are there any receipts for what the PO had recently done??..if not, I would do the maintenance any car that age would require; all fluids, rod the radiator, belts, plugs, all filters etc.
Then, for the AJ16 Jaguar XJS specific items I would strongly recommend you replace the following to avoid future headaches. Some folks might find it excessive;
1-crankshaft position sensor ( I keep a spare)
2-Coolant temperature sensor (for ECU)
3-Clean throttle body (make sure someone familiar with the engine does it)
4-Idle speed control valve
5-Clean or replace EGR valve
6-replace fan clutch
7-Seal Wiring harness entry on firewall with silicone and use a good connector grease like Motorcraft XG-12 on the ECU connectors. Some cars have suffered from water ingress resulting in corroded pins
8-Renew grounds when you come across them
Even if the car is running well I would also buy a new Throttle possition sensor and 3-4 OEM ignition coils as you are able to, and keep them in store
Some people like to replace things when they break, I like pre-emptive maintenance.
These cars are very reliable and solid, but they are almost 17 years old, so they will require a few things here and there
