Is my XJS getting too hot? Help!
Hey gang. I just bought another Jag. This one is a 94 v12 that seems to be in great shape all over.
One thing I have noticed is that when idling, the temp gauge nearly goes into the red. Which is alarming to me of course. Once the car is moving, it quickly makes it way back to "N".
Should I be on the look-out for something? No dummy lights at all. Drives smoothly. Only has a ever-so-slight shudder idling...if that is of any help.

The V12 is incredibly resilient despite the claims of many about dropping valve seats. That being said you SHOULD very much be alarmed. No amount of overheating is a good amount of overheating.
It sounds like your fans are toast!! Check your electric fan to see if it is operating and more importantly inspect your mechanical fan! It sounds like you clutch is probably bad and the fan itself may be possibly damaged.
After about 30-40mph a car doesn't need a fan to keep cool, the air being forced through the radiator will do the job, so if its hot when not moving, your fans are the culprit! Fix it now because it becomes more expensive!

Thanks for the honest response. It concerned me very very much. I brought it to a garage today and they found it to be a bad switch for the electric fan. Part won't be in until Monday so I have it rigged with some alligator clips from the relay to the chassis for always on operation until then....only so I can sort out or discover whatever else I can over the weekend.
