Default New 1990 XJS owner, headlights don't work, advice?

I just purchased my first Jag. Everything is in pretty good shape. A few minor problems. The most urgent is the headlights don't work at all. The turn signals and brake lights work. I have not checked anything yet. The seller told me they did not work and had not tried to fix them. I am hoping it is just a fuse or something simple. Any advice on where I should start?

YOu are correct to start with the fuse.
Then goto the headlight itself. Test for voltage there. it is UNLIKELY that both would be burnt out, but possible.
Fuse, bulb, switches (both teh turn knob and the dimmer on teh turn signals)

Well it is not the fuse. There are 4 headlights so I am sure they are not all 4 burnt out at the same time. Is there an inline fuse somewhere? How about a relay? I turn on headlights and hit high beams and still nothing. How do I check the switch? Any help would be appreciatted.

Large silver Hella relay, left component panel under hood. Blue wire is feed from headlight switch, should have power when headlamps are turned on. It will, and now either theblue/red wire (low beams feed) or the blue/white wire (high beams) should be hot, but they are not and so your lights are not on. That's beacause the relay is bad. Jump blue to either feed and the lights will come on.

Message me private if you want a good used one, they are expensive to buy new.

Jagtechohio YOU ARE THE MAN! Thanks for your help. I tested the relay the way you described and bingo, headlights on. I will PM you for the used relay you mentioned.

Awesome, and thanks to you too for your purchase. Have you taken a look at the convertible top pump fluid level yet? Sun could break out any minute...or at least we can dream.

Hey JagTechOhio... My low beams don't work and only the inner lights work on the high beams. could this be the relay or is it an all or nothing situation?

I realize that this is your first post, but you are replying to a 16 year old thread where the relay in question was offered, purchased, and received all in the posts here. Reviving threads like this is a waste of everyone's time and effort. You should have started a new one.

Send me a pic of the outside can.
I have lots of spare parts left over from my 94 project cars.
Where are you located and what would you think is fair price with shipping.

Yes, it was my first post. So, I want to thank you for the warm welcome to the forum. I had no idea there was a statute of limitations on asking for help. I guess it upset you to ask about supplying the relay that you no longer had and missed out on the sale of the part. But the good news is that I did get offers to help with my question and it does give me hope that some people are here to truly offer their sincere help and experience this Jaguar hobby needs to stay afloat. My deepest apologies for jumping into the forum without the expertise and knowledge to navigate it's intricacies at your level of knowledge. Maybe, if I spend some more time navigating this forum, I'll figure out how to do a new post and copy this exchange into it with the hope that others who are learning will not be discouraged by the establishment I faced. Good luck in all you do.

Thank you for your help. I'm just trying to keep my wife's interest up in her old Jaguar, but having to drive home with fog lights only really upset her. I am new to the forum (We've owned this Jag for 10 years so I just consider myself lucky that I didn't have to jump in before!). I try to share my TR6 knowledge and expertise for 35 years whenever I can. I'll reach out soon. Thanks.
