Hi revski

The Jaguar Gods had decided that those Cars were not for you, so do not get downhearted as sooner or later the right car will turn up.

But don't let missing the ones you have, alter your frame of mind in any way, to the point where you start letting your heart rule your head and then end up by making a bad decision.

By buying a Car that is going to cost you much more time and money, than you planned.

You have already got the edge on all those other 'Punters' who are blinded by 'eye candy' and know nothing about these Cars and as such they could be driving away with a Shedload of problems that they won't know how to fix.

Don't feel you have to have this one, as there will always be another maybe better one, so go and have a look at it, with both your eyes Wide open and if it doesn't feel right walk away.

Looks very nice!

In one of the sticky threads at the top of this section is an XJS buyers guide that might be helpful

Cheers

Hi Revski

Scrawling the price on the Windscreen like that, could be a Sign, that they want it out of the way.

'Gas Guzzlers' like the XJS are not everybody’s 'Cup of Tea'

So I would fein total disinterest and offer $5000 'Tops' which could well be quite a lot more than they paid.

Be sure to tell them just how much a 'New Ski Slope' Costs.

But I don't like the look of that 'Speedo' so as nice as She looks, I would pass this one by and spend the money on one from a 'Private Seller'

And apart from the speedo as pointed out above, the radio antenna looks broken . . . Offer even less.

Hi Revski

Its really not a difficult job, as long as you take your time and also assuming the New one has been cut to the right size.

If you are buying an XJS from a dealer, then I for one would want at least a one year guarantee, as if the ABS goes wrong then you've got a big problem on your hands.

In any event carefully check over all the Bushes as well as everything to do with the IRS, as if anything needs replacing, including rear Rotors and Callipers, then the IRS has to come out.

Also Check the Rad for any Product that may have been put in there to Stop it Leaking.

As far as buying an XJS from a dealer is concerned, I would only ever buy one from a Jaguar Main Agent, where they would go right through the Car, properly correcting any faults they find.

There are so many things to go wrong with these Cars, until they've been properly sorted, that if you buy one with the faults covered up it is going to cost you a fortune.

Take another good look at that 'Speedo' on which Malc and I both agree.

Something just doesn't look right with this Car and I wouldn't bother even going to look.

Find a nice one from someone who can't afford the Gas/Petrol and doesn't use the Car enough to justify having to run Her as well as their 'Daily Driver'

I recently picked up my '94 XJS 4.0 Coupe in the same price range with a lot more miles.

What gave me great peace of mind was a pre-purchase inspection. Cost just $100.

The inspector was able to identify leaks, broken mounts, lights on the dash and a whole bunch of things that I would not have been able to do, even if I had driven it myself. Using this info, I was able to knock $400 off the price.

This one looks like its pretty solid. Get a PPI and a CarFax or car history report.

But bottom line: you are buying a 26 year old car. It will have problems. Question is if they are major or minor. Fixing all the little things in half the fun. Having a car you can't drive and must dump $1000's into is no fun at all.

Have a good look at it and start with a low ball price like $4100

Drive it hard for around 20-30 minutes and check out every switch to make sure they all work as they should. Headlights, fog lights, windows, flashers, cruise control, etc. Like Doug said, check out the buyers guide he put together in the above sticky thread. It is very informative... If it checks out, then I do not think the price is out of line. Good luck.
