new wheels/ now wobble
Well, I put a set of XK8 Lamina wheels on my 1994 XJS. New tires, 235/50-17. Michelin Pilot Sports. No spacer used. They bolted right up and look great.
Problem: at 45-53 mph, there is a wobble in the steering wheel. Otherwise perfect at faster or slower speeds. I did re-torque the lug nuts to be sure.
My first thought is to go back to the tire store and have them re-balanced, but I'm wondering what other reasons there could be?? Any thoughts of what else to check?
Thanks!

As long as you are 100% certain that the hub-centric geometry of the new wheels is exactly the same as for the normal XJS wheels, it should be a balancing problem only.
But, "fitting" is not the same as being identcally hub-centric - meaning the carefully machined part of the centre of the wheel fits precisely to the equally carefully machined hub.
Someone who knows will be able to clarify this point for you.

Found out the problem. The front wheels from the XK8 do not "quite" meet up to the hub. The problem is right at the outermost part of the hub where the dust cap seats gets fouled on the inside edge of the wheel. It needs about 1/4" spacer.
I found this one at 10mm thick. I suppose I could have it machined down to 1/4" if it's too thick. Can't find any other options for a spacer.

DR Bill:
Look up ElinorB's adventures with hubs on the XJ6 list.
All spacers are not alike. I don't like either, but one version definitely better.
It provides for hub center match.
And, lug stud length with spacers may become too short to be safe!
Losing wheels at speed not fun. Been almost there.

Well, I'm convinced that XK8 wheels will not mount to my XJS on the front. Even with a spacer, can't use the center caps and I feel like the mounting using a spacer is not as secure.
I know Reinaldo has successfully mounted them on his car, but I can't get a response from him as to how he did it. Reinaldo, are you still out there? Help a brother out!
