Happy Sunday everyone
I was going through fixing various little details in the car that I had listed, one of which was the resettable trip mileage counter.
My odometer was working ok but not the resettable one as it would hook on a number and stop there. Sometimes as I reset it to zero, it will cover more miles but then hook again.
I took off the cluster and tried to identify why was it hooking , and not quite sure why as none of the plastic gears showed any crack or any thing to stop them from rolling, although I think that when resetting the mileage, the teeth will not hook well ahd hence the hooking and stopping.
Anyway, after a good clean up and some light oiling of the gears, they seemed to work well when rolling the main gear driving the main odometer. I would roll it by hand and observe it passing the motion through where as before it would not all the time.
Coupled everything back and fixed the cluster onto the car.
Went for a test drive whereby everything worked well but this time the odometer failed to operate.
Few days later took off the cluster again for checking and noticed that one of the two wire plugs that connect to the back of the cluster, the one that fits behind the speedo had lost a piece of the curved brass bit which makes contact with the printed circuit, see first photo below.
I brought a wire clip, cut it and sort of formed it to a similar shape as the broken piece and soldered it there and made sure it had enough curvature to make contact with the printed circuit, see photos 2 & 3.
Reassembled everything hoping that this is it, but after a test drive it was still the same, no odometer.
The computer is still reading the miles but not on the gauge.
Any advice as what to look for again?
Whilst searching the forum before posting, I came across some near related issues but not exactly this and wonder if one of the suggested solutions is to add a separate earth wire?
On a separate note, the little motor driving those numbers has 4 wires connected to it (last photo with arrow pointing at it). Has anyone tried powering it to check if it is working and if yes which wires? I did not attempt to power it lest I damage it.
Thanks for any advice.
