Ok - This is an Odd Ball - KEROSENE
My 928, headed to Limerock Tomarrow.
Since we're on Renlist now... I'll chime in.,, Yes the lot over there can be a prickly bunch, myself included. As for your ticky lifters, I had success with "Marvel Mystery oil". You may have to up the dose since the 928 uses about 8 quarts of oil. You also want to run a thinner oil fill to allow the oil and it's cleansers to get thin enough to penetrate into all the small pores of the lifter and free stuff up.
Here's what I would do....
1. Drain out 4 quarts, add 2 quarts of 0 weight oil.
2. Refill the rest with Marvel Mustery Oil
3. Drive it for days, gingerly but let it get hot.
(oil may never get hot enough to thin out and clean varnish, This era 928 has an oil cooler. If still noisy live with it or Proceed to Nuclear option 4)
4. While idling at about 1000 RPM block off a portion of the radiator so it gets hot, just below the brink of over heating. You'll know it's hot becasue your electic 2nd'ary cooling can should come on.
The thin oil, the heat and increased high idle oil pressure will break down the varnish. You really need to be a good mechanic to pull this off safely but it will work. If not then you'll have to live with a noisy lifer or dig in and replace them. If it starts to boil over remove what ever you used to block off the radiator (card board) and it will quickly cool down as long as your clutch fan it good. AGAIN, I STRESS YOU REALLY NEED TO UNDERSTAND ENGINES to safely live on this edge.
5. Wait for noise to go away. Might take awhile. When it does let it cool down. Change oil filter, refill with half Mobil1 15w-40 and half 15W-40 Rotella. Done!
I would also replace the oil filter with a Porsche one after it's all better and you go to your final oil fill.. Noisy lifters is supposed to be part of 928 ownsership but mine doest make any lifter noise even after sitting for weeks.
Jag's especially the V12 dont suffer from noisy lifters becasue they get hot. 928's are over engeneer'd and dont get hot unless pushed hard. Mine will be pushed to the limits on Saturday at Limerock and will get hot but most 928's do that.
About Rennlist... Sometimes I can actually 'hear' folks enjoy ones struggle, misfortune and not knowing. Egos run wild. It makes me sad and keeps me away. Anywho... I guess things are exactly the way they are supposed to be...
Really! I thank you all.

Hahahahaha,,,, hahahahaha...
Man, I'm telling ya! Go read thru some of them threads, Van!
Just "catty" (pardon the word play)...
No need for it. It's wrenching!

Iv heard about that place before, makes me greatful to have this community. Also motivated to give back if I can solve a problem or mail somebody a critical part at cost I've done something meaningful.
So, I went ahead and DID it, lol... Again (and I'm serious) thanks for the reassurance, clear and straightforward sharing and passing on of wisdom. It matters... I swear (and I'm serious again, lol) so so so much about what goes on at the 'other' support forum is just folks (even if they don't have anything meaningful to contribute) instilling doubt and fear and uncertainty... It's like somewhere along the way, the better one gets at point out the "what could go wrong", the more credibility they have earned on the forum. In that,,, doubt spreading becomes bottomless.
Anyways. It holds just about 10 quarts and it was running hi on the stick. I unscrewed the holder for the dipstick and pumped about a gallon out of the pan. A HARD pump thru a skinny tube, I might add.
I replaced with 3 quarts of ATF and a bit more than a half quart of Marvel's mystery oil. At the same time, I changed out the coolant (green), drained the block and swapped the thermostat for what I'm now guessing is a cooler running thermo... Replaced coolant with the orange stuff. All went well.
Started her up and I noticed huge changes in the Opressure for the lower... Very quickly started noticing changes in the sounds, tapping and ticking of valves - the point of all of this - and lifters lightening and diminishing... I know folks may not like the sound of it, but I've driven maybe 20 miles, slooow careful miles like that, and the change is drastic. Due to coolant and thermo change running much much cooler and QUIETER than she was. We'll see how that goes.
I've read and read and read on the Rennlist group about motor oil and I've landed on Rotella triple protection 15w40 with a high zinc content... A few guys said they liked it and I didn't get the feeling I needed a 20w50...
I will change out the oil this weekend. Drive once more and mayyyybe bring the temp up like ICS described... Replace with an OEM Porsche filter and Rotella,,, and report back. I am very very happy so far, lol,,,, and so is the starter... Turns the engine over in a HALF A SECOND, lol...
Thank you guys!!!

my recomendation would be 50/50 Diesel fuel and motor oil,(Kerosene has NO lubrcating properties), diesel fuel has some lubrication in it!
i have done it a number of times never any problems!
altho i have heard of some diesel ENGINES do a runaway, when using Kero. it can ignite at much lower temperatures!
once the engine gets very hot you basicly cannot shut it down , it will run on its own crankcase oil, you could cut the fuel lines and it will override the govenor and scream till it explodes!
and smoke out the whole neighbor hood.LOL.
but just be careful !

The crucial aspect of stopping a runaway diesel is choke it. Pull your shirt off and stuff it in the intake if thats all you have. Stop it from breathing.
some times like on a Detroit 2 stroke diesel ,if you stuff a shirt /rag it gets chewed up by the blower and the engine keeps on running, they mostly have a 5" opening before they start to get chewed to pieces!
with turbo ones the rags can slow it down for awhile but smoke like beyond belief for a long time!
and then with air flow stopped they start suckin more crankcase oil up out of sump!
if and when the oil in crankcase is gone the engine bearings will seize and slow down till it throws a rod ,or some such things!
yes it can become a panic ,untill the fire department shows up!,, been there done that, 30yrs with diesel engines, still love them anyway!
