I just made a fascinating discovery:

This component was "functioning" and I only happened upon it by chance.

This is the tensioner or jockey pulley for the fan belt. Were the same ones also used to drive the aircon? Obviously the cars here have the smog pump as the tensioner for that.

No they were not used for air con belt. Mechanical fan only.

Thanks, that's awesome. I would prefer a new bearing. 51.75 sounds fair to me.

Wowee, trouble almost there !!!

1. Can not see what the hole in the pulley
looks like?? OK, or just as bad ?

2. Junk or fixable. I lean toward the latter. Cut that old
shaft off. Drill out the stub in the arm. Fit an
8 grade bolt as a shaft. Fit a brass bush to the pulley
to fit the new shaft. Include a Zerk for lube. Better than
ever.

3. Is the Jagbits or Ebay assembly any better?
I'd trust Jagbits just a tad more.

The bearing was long gone. The pulley was riding on the shaft. Luckily, the tension of the belt held the pulley in place. I ordered an new pulley and bearing and shaft to repair the arm. I have been wondering what the odd squeal was during startup.
