Default Outboard brakes

Hi everyone,
I know this is an old topic ,however I would like a clarification.
On numerous posts about outboard brake conversions (mines a 76 XJS .For the modification I have XJ40 hubs and stub axles ) the advice is that you can use the original or XJ40/X300 dog bone as they are the same ,and you can fit the Xj40 stub axle to the originals. What I have encountered is the dog bones are not the same, the flange opening on the original shafts outside to outside are 114 mm ,the XJ40 are 102 mm. so you can not fit the Xj40 stub axle to earlier dog bones ?Am I missing something? From where I stand they’re not interchangeable.
Has anyone else encountered this? And if so what was the solution other than getting XJ40/X300 dog bones?
Cheers

What year are the xj40/300 donor parts? My understandign is Ford consolidated the parts catalogue and used a smaller volvo u-joint across all brands (Ford, Volvo, Jagu etc) starting in the mid 90's. So ya' may need to complete axle from a later car to fit the splines on the newer hub.

You "might" be able to use a conversion U-joint. I dont do it this way, I just use a complete axle BUT this may be something worth exploring. I think the later ujoint are 1330 and the early stuff is 1310 (not 100% sure, measure for yourself) That said there are all sorts of conversion u-joints to be had.

The XJ40 flange is 4 inch, the 76 XJS is 4.5 so the 4 inch XJ40 stub axle flange would need to go onto 4.5 xjs dog bone which I don't think can work.

Why not just find a later facelift rear axle and drop it in?

Hi,

Has anyone considered swapping the hub carrier from a DB7?

Yes... The the i6 DB7 stuff is same as the late 94/95 XJS. The DB7 V12 Vantage is a evolution of the same and has and eccentric for toe adjustment along with many other small upgrades.
