Default Power window troubles.

Hello all,
Young John and I are trying to figure out what is wrong with our windows.
The fuses in the interior fuse block look good. I've taken apart the switches the contacts are clean and check out. Are there other fuses/fuse links that I should check out?
TIA

Peace
Neil

Neil, both windows are flat-out inoperative?

Not sure what car you have but if it's an 80s vintage XJS there a power window relay which sends voltage to a circuit breaker. From there voltage goes to the switches.

Do you have a test light or meter? Any voltage to the switches?

Bit more info, please :-)

Cheers
DD

Hi Neil
Be the same as mine then, there is a thermal breaker I think it's in the console I'll have a look tomorrow.

I would also check the switches both of mine require regular cleaning. I would do the relay mod if I were you, just be careful when the switch is in the home position the motor has 12volts on BOTH TERMINALS the book Does NOT show it like this and if you wire up incorrectly you will fry the wiring.

I have a diagram if it will help

Did you check the power window motor?or did you check the wirings?I suggest that you bring it to the auto shop if ever, they can fix it for you though, it will cost not much.

Hi Neil

Sorry for the delay work gets in the way of life sometimes.

Here is the circuit just be AWARE that the XJS motor has 12volts on BOTH sides and grounds one side to move the motor. You will need to meter out the switch to make sure you get the right wires.

This cct used double pole relays if you can only get single pole (horn relays) let me know and I will modify the cct.

20Amp relays will would be the smallest I would use.

Me again

Here is another diagram you need to swap the two terminals on the switch circled in red

CP7 is the connector and NU is 12V, B is ground if you look at the cct the switch has 12V to each side of the motor at rest.

I have labeled each side of the switch as Rocker 1 & 2. Lets say you press up and rocker 1 moves to ground one side of the motor and rocker 2 stays. I have also relabeled the relay diagram with the RG and GR from the switch.

What you need to do is change the wires so each side of the motor is grounded and 12volts is switched.

Hope this is easier to follow. Let me know if you need more info. But I suspect if you do this mod you will have no more problems with your windows. I have not done this yet as there is no interior in my car but before I was always cleaning the switches as one or other of the windows would always decide to stop, (usually when it rained).

I have just re-read your post and if the switches are clean then I would check the voltage to the motor. This needs to be under load, so measure across the motor while you press the switch, you should read battery voltage or close to.

If you read less than 12volts check the wiring for bad connections, especially the earths.

To do this disconnect the battery and with meter on Ohms (Z) meter from each side of the motor to the 12v INPUT of the switch you should have less than 1Z, then activate the switch and measure from the grounded side of the motor to the ground pin on the input of the switch.

Let me know how you get on......
