Default Power Windows on an 84

So, my drivers side window decided to not go back up after it went down. I decided to see what was going on and found that the window motor is only turning one way. Is this normal? Should'nt the motor be spinning both ways? If so, does this mean I need a new motor?

Thanks!

More common is a problem with the window switch. If you are good with your hands you can carefully pry it open and clean the contacts. Quite often that's all that's needed.

I agree about the switches. Sometimes they respond to a squirt of electronic cleaner / lubricant from their topside. Just use the provided extension tube on the spray can and a rag around, to prevent blasting the whole interior.

Hey guys, that was the problem. I simply disconnected the male and female connections of the switch, wiped off the male prongs and blew air into the female end. Both windows work and are good to go.

Thanks again for all the help!!!

New guy here. I have an 89 XJ-S and experienced a similar problem with my driver's side window this morning. My window will go down but not up. How do I get to the contacts to clean them and what type of cleaner should I use?

Thanks for your help.

Use aerosol electrical contact cleaner. You local auto parts store will have some.

It's been quite a long time since I removed an window switch from an XJS. As I recall the *correct* way is to lift the ski slope (console woodgrain panel) so the switch can be released and pushed out from behind. However, I also have a vague memory of siply being able to wriggle the switch out from topside.

Others will chime in.

Cheers

Mine pop out with a razor blade slid under the edge of the switch, and some wiggling, but there's only two or three screws holding the console in place, so It's not hard to pop it up to get to the switch from the under side.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot this weekend. It was a cold ride home. Love the ride, though.

The spray did the trick. The switch popped right up with a small pull. I'm guessing it had been pulled before. Thanks for the advice.

FWIW mine quit in the down position, after cleaning, spraying and lubing, it still didn't want to move. In frustration i gave the top of the motor a short sharp rap with a hammer, and 3 yrs later, no problems.
