Default Radio Dead **Fixed**

My radio has taken a dump. I have checked every fuse I can find. Fuses under the console and in the trunk by the antenna relay. Main fuse panel and everywhere else I can think of. The radio doesn't light up, no flashing red security light and antenna doesn't operate. Am I missing something else, fuse, relay? Is it toasted?

I hate to replace the old radio, it sounds good enough to me and I don't like the controls on the new after market radios. No knobs, multi function buttons etc. Old dog new tricks!!

Thanks

There's a radio relay in the console....behind the shifter, possibly under the cubby box. Can't remember exactlly

Click here and scroll to section 17.1 for some info

http://www.captainjaguarscathouse.co...ec%20Guide.pdf

A 20amp inline fuse is shown in the console area....making two radio fuses in the console. Did you find both of them?

If you have a test light the relay is easily checked or you can simply replace it as a guess....only a few dollars

Cheers

Thanks Doug,

I had already checked the scheme from captainjags. I found both fuses under the console, nice and handy, and the fuse back by the antenna motor. The radio relay is making up with the ignition on. I'll check the trunk relay a little more. I think I found everything on the schematic. I am just trying to make sure I didn't miss something else.

Dang!! I sure do like a radio that I can use without a manual!!

It's beginning to sound like the radio may have simply gone Tango Uniform.

I know whatcha mean about radios with 15 tiny multi-function buttons, disco displays, drop-down menus, etc. Not my cup of tea, either.

Years ago I let my kids talk me into such a radio for my XJS. I hated it, for the reasons listed...which were worsened because the radio in an XJS is some distance from the driver and well outside of normal line-of-sight. I was tickled when the darn thing quit working so I could go back to the old, original radio!

Cheers

I should add that your 1990 should have the "AJ8700" radio. If needed you can find a good used one out there somewhere. Jaguar used that design for several years so they're not ultra-rare or anything

I'm thinking it's history and was probably just grasping at straws. I will take another look and then decide what my next step will be. Probably try to find a used one here on the forums.

The new radios have a lot of features, but, I can't use a function unless I'm at a dead stop. Maybe old beat up fingers have something to do with that. Bluetooth is nice, but, I hardly ever have the top up.

In case anyone is wondering, I am not opposed to technology. Last month I transferred all of my 8 tracks to cassette. Changeing with the times

Thanks!

If you take the radio out you can check whether or not the power is there on the wires. At least then you'll know if the radio is gubbed or whether to keep looking for the fault in the car.

Good point! Gonna have to remove it to replace it anyway!

Default Stock Radio/Deck

Just sayin', I still have my stock Jag Radio/Cassette from my '89 XJS, works perfectly, and I have the Code also. -$50.00 plus shipping if anyone's interested.

My 83 also had an inline fuse buried behind the radio itself.

Default Dead Radio **Fixed**

I pulled my radio out of the dash and found a fuse in the top of the radio. It is a 10a plastic push in type and it sits flush with the case. The fuse was blown!! It is on the left side and it was covered with a piece of tape. In this case the tape was clear like scotch tape. I don't know if all of the radios have this fuse, it hasn't been mentioned, and it may be covered with something other than clear tape.

It may have blown when I was screwing around with the antenna wiring the other day. I blew the fuse for the antenna at that time.

All is well, I'm fat, dumb and happy with my outdated radio!! 2 knobs, five buttons........life is good!!!

Can anyone help with wiring a radio? Car is a 1989 XJS. Car wire colours are RED/BLUE. THICK WHITE/PINK, PURPLE, THIN WHITE/PINK. Radio wires are RED/WHITE, THICK WHITE/PINK, PURPLE, THIN WHITE /PINK. Have connected up to the point where the radio lights up, the aerial goes up and down, the code can be entered but the code does not bring up a radio station. Anyone any answers, please?

I really sympathise. I went through all this hassle because I forgot to note the wires years ago. here is the key (from an '85):

Radio wiring:

Red/white (thinner of the two) = ignition switch live input

Red/white (thicker of the two) = feed to aerial relay

Purple = permanent live for radio memory

Grey/red = illumination with sidelights

Hope this helps

Default 10A fuse in radio itself...

Hello All,

I found this thread very helpful however, didn't fix my problem, I couldn't find any in-line fuses behind the radio itself. So as I was moving the radio around when it was out, guess what I found? A 10A fuse in radio itself! Photo attached along with radio removal photos - hope these help someone.

Had the same issue. Was testing antenna stuff in the trunk and blew the fuse on the top of the radio. The radio continued to has a beep and flashing red light but that’s it. I have never seen a radio with so many fuses no wonder English cars get a bad rap they are silly with the electrical engineering.
