Default Rear deck lid lights

93 XJS 4.0. I have 2 sets of lights on my trunk lid. One set is the rear fog lights, they work fine, the other set does not work. What are they, I can't find them on the wiring diags? I also cannot find where the fuses are for them or any of the other tail lights. I checked the fuse panels in the driver and passenger footwells. ?????

Do you have a picture? There are fog lights on the rear bumper, brake lights, running lights in the brake lights and lights for the license plate.

No idea what other set you mean

They are on the trunk lid, the fog lights and the unknown lights.

Thanks.

Is it a 3rd brake light? Fuses should be inline with tail light wiring.

Which lights do you mean?
Is your car a facelift with black bumper, is it correct?

I attached a pic;

1: dummy light (to fill the space for the wider number plate)
2: rear fog
3: back lamp (lit up when shifted in R)
4: brake lamp/position lamp
5: flasher
6: reflector

I wasn't sure how the lights were setup on the facelift, nice helpful diagram japthug! Is this what dancer 308 is talking about?

I was assuming he meant some other lights, because those are just the lights on the car.I guess by lid he just means the 3 built into it like you have in your diagram.

Have someone check your backup lights or do it at night and see if you see any difference when looking out the back. Not sure how the wiring it setup, but its likely you could put it in reverse with the parking brake on and engine OFF on flat ground and they should still come on.

If they are not in fact working, check for ground and power at the back first, before you going tearing through the center console to check out the shifter switch

dancer308,

I presume you mean the units nearest to the number plate? I understand those are just reflectors which is why you can't get them to "work".

Jaguar had to add them on to American cars, presumably to meet some obscure US legislation about additional reflectors. That's why they are an additional unit, not part of the normal light cluster. They are not fitted to XJS in other countries as far as I know, certainly we didn't fit them in the UK.

And winner is... #3. Back up lights. WOW. I had a guy watch the lights as I was turning on lights, head lights, brake lights, turning signals, emergency flashers, fog lights and back up lights. He said everything worked. I left the car running with the lights on and walked to the back of the car with him. That is when I noticed these lights not on, I said I wonder what these are for, he said, I don't know. Hard to find good help these days.

Thanks Japthug
