that's what I figured. It looks like it might have been changed once but they used gasket maker instead as I can see it peaking out at certain spots.

Also I need to remove the one output shaft so I can remove the broken bolt. Should i drain the fluid out of the diff first?

As clean as I think I can get it without putting another 20 hrs into it lol.

Took those stupid covers of. They collect more dirt and crap in them than anything. And were pretty rust as is.

So should I replace all the grease nipples with new ones? Are they a universal size?

Still have a list of things to do. And have to start ordering parts lol.

Just looking. Are you sure you can't remove that broken bolt by turning the output and finding a place where the bolt end will clear the cast differential? Looks like it might at some point in the rotation. Opening that to remove the bolt seems like it could open ya up for some real trouble. I watched a guy resetting the output (sorry if that's not what they are called) and it took a LOT of precision in setting it back up.

Excellent point JJJ. It looks like at 12 o clock there may be an indentation inn the retainer that might allow it.

Rescue
I would just unscrew the nipples and shove a grease gun on them to make sure they are not blocked, and then put them back. If you do have a duff one, the threads are 1/4 UNF.

There is an indentation but i think that was put there just to access the bolt heads so u can hold them while removing the nuts. I tried backing it out through there already and it came out about 1/2" and then the head hits the casting....barely....

When I get the new bolt ill just cut the old one shorter and pop it out and see if I can slide in the new one but I'm pretty sure I am gonna have to at least loose the assembly (maybe just enough so slide it out and giggle the new bolt into place).

Also only place I have seemed to find a gadget is terryjags
not expense but shipping and exchange is gonna cost more. Cant find any in Canada. And closest jag dealership isnt worth the drive. I can see why at some point gasket maker was used. Maybe I should go this route?

I'm ordering the bolt and I'm gonna replace all the nuts (8) so with the gasket the order is 35 usd and 38usd for shipping so like 100 cdn after exchange. Ugh.

I read that any gear oil is ok as long as it's not synthetic. Also I have to add an additive due to the posi in the rear. This true?

Also how can I tell if the diff breather is ok? When I was tilting the diff to clean the underside fluid came out of it...so will it still be ok or should I pull it out and cleaning it (how?)

For the diff use special differential oil for the LSD. eg:
Amazon Amazon
As the axle is out of the car, why not buy a new bolt, cut off the old one and install the new one with the head outwards, nut inwards?
Or, just grind a hair off the hex (or the retainer) to enable you to get the new bolt in?

Te breather just unscrews, but if oil dripped out, then it is fine left as is.

These are the bolts that go through the disc brake..part # 36 in pic. I will try a few things before. Putting the bolt in backwards though not sure if that would due anything to the balance of the disc?

I use 75/90 or 80/90. I can't comment on 75/140 as I've never used it nor considered doing so......but is seems awfully heavy to me.

If the budget allows, and you fancy it, go ahead with the synthetic gear lube. But, it isn't required.....and the real world benefit, for most drivers, is a bit iffy to me. For a quarter of the price you can use conventional diff lube which should be available at every parts store you go to, or even Walmart. Any name brand will do. If the label doesn't state that it's suitable for LSDs you can simply buy a tube of LSD additive for another $7.00 or so. Or go to the local GM dealer and get a bottle of the 1052358 LSD additive. (now #88900330, I think)

Cheers
DD

The cheap stuff is 13.99 and the additive is 14.99 so it's not that much of a price difference lol.

Just a correct diameter UNF bolt, but buy a high tensile steel one. Once the disc and driveshaft are on the other three, I cannot see you having a problem mounting the fourth bolt from the outside.

Its 2" x 7/16" fine UNF according to my gauge.

Also was looking at your idea of cutting and replacing the bolt backwards.there might just be enough room. I just wont know til I'm ready to put it all together lol.
