Default Sandblasting front pulley - imbalance chance?

Good afternoon Gents!

In my "task" to make my V12 look nice again, I have come across a nasty piece of steel: the large 3-groove pulley (which bolts to the harmonic balancer). It is rather rusty and doesn't look nice at all. Well, not really that bad but I want to make it better, just for peace of mind.

I am worried, that if I have it sandblasted, that it might cause an imbalance and therefore increase wear on the (already hard to get in useable condition) harmonic balancer or maybe even towards the engine.

Has anyone got any idea what could happen? Are they balanced at all?

Cheers

Damien

What makes you think that Sandblasting would unbalance it any more than the rust has?

If you decide to go the Sandblasting route, consider glass beads or Walnut Shells not the whole ones obviously (Lol)

Well, I don't know. It just seems like everything that spins will wobble, if they aren't balanced. And if material is removed, it would become unbalanced... At least that is what is in my head...

Last time I went to have a steel/iron part glass beaded, the company said "not possible as that won't work well - too hard" !?

No chance at all.

I have done many over the years. section.

That pulleypack bolts to the centre section of the front pulley, and has NO direct impact on the harmonic part.

Grant, so you say I can sandblast it, give it some (even) coats of fresh paint and all fine? No possible wobbles? If yes, that sounds good!

Right o skip!

Will be getting that done ASAP so, when the front crank seal arrives, that can be replaced and refitted. Then I can carry on with more assembling... YAY!

Gee, Daim, you are super cautious. Great in places. Not so much in others.

Clean it up. It's balance will be as it was when new, no better no worse. But, in nit picking style, the crud has created a miniscule change in balance.

If you wish to play around. create a shaft. wood would be fine. Pass it through the opening for the crank. create a pair of level V blocks. Place the shaft in the V! turn it.
Any propensity to stop in one spot? Probably not. But, if so, gravity has decided the low spot is heavy!!!

Please note, this post done in a huge amount of "tongue in cheek".

Clean it, blast it, paint it and use it.

mine was rusty , so a made one from aluminum, light weight!

saved about 4lbs, and revs quicker, rotating weight reduction!

Viper P/S pump , actual weight 3.5lbs, more weight saved.

remember weight is the enemy, few lbs here ,few lbs there, adds up, this was 22yrs ago, since then i got better ideas for weight saving on a XJS V12.

Chipping hammer and fill the dents with red oxide.
Kept the Merchant Navy afloat for decades.
Balance is only relevant if your ying is fully aligned with your whatsit and you are taking a fully synergistic approach to your doo dah.
Anything else just leads to madness.

EVEN coats, hell no, I hit mine with p/pack at 20 paces, and the car never knew, and I cannot see it anyway.

Mine has the front V missing, E/fans, so one belt less.
