Default Should I part out a beautiful XJS?

93k miles, always garaged, 6 cylinder, automatic.

I recently bought it and it is still at the previous owner's home. In another post I noted that the brakes progressively lock up on their own so I will need to tow it home.

In the meantime, I may have bitten off more than I can chew, so I listed the car on Craigslist and have virtually had no interest so far. One person offered me 500 dollars.

In any case, I will try to resolve the issue once I get it home, but if I can't I plan on parting it out. It seems almost like a crime to part this car out, but if I don't it will just start gradually going downhill (I've seen this happen to other folks who don't drive their car but cant seem to part with it...eventually it is just turns into a parts car) anyway.

Prices on used parts for these cars are very high and I should be able to break out even in 6 months to a year.

I find it strange that this car has little value...and yet parts are at a premium.

What would you do?

By the looks of it, I would rebuild the brakes with rebuilt calipers, new rotors and pads, and any brake lines that I could replace. Then I would get into the ABS system. That car is too nice to destroy. I use mine as a daily driver, purchased it two years ago and have only done some minor corrections.

I agree the car is too nice to break and the problem with the brakes can be resolved. I wish I didn't have all of the projects I have coming up because I'd buy it and fix it.

These cars don't sell fast. It's a thin market. Wait it out if you can, the right buyer will come along and will pay a fairer price.

Wish I could afford to take it off your hands; I'd trailer it home and fix it and then have to fight the wife to see whose car it was. Paid $650 for my '95 XJ6 and brought it home on a trailer since it was absolutely dead. A month later, after many posts and help from the folks on this forum I had her running great, everything working etc. Nothing invested buy time and patience. Not very many brave souls out there willing to take a chance on these fine old cars but those who own and love them pay big bucks for parts to keep them going. Do what you must, but parting that beauty out would be a sin IMHO. My wife just bought a '94 BMW 325i convertible that I have a ton of work in front of me to make it drivable, otherwise I'd jump at the chance to pick up your XJR.
