Default Spending time under the car...how??

Just curious what you guys have come up with to make it easier to squeeze in under your cars for servicing, fixing or just looking around.

Are you using ramps, jackstands, lifts or what have you? I've kind of been thinking about splurging on a two or four post lift, but that would necessitate having the inside of my garage ceiling reframed.

I'm not the size of Fat ******* but I ain't no Twiggy either...........and I'm not getting any younger.

Thanks, Terry

I use ramps. Due to the long nose, I use some bricks to get onto the ramps with, to reduce the risk of damaging the front spoiler lip.

Check out MaxJax for a low ceiling garage. Got one 4 years ago and could not be happier.

Either, or both, depending on the nature of the task at hand.

Ramps are easy and, generally, safe.

Jackstands are more work and can be unsafe if not positioned properly....but if the wheels need to come off, well, you don't have much choice. When using jackstands I put the wheels under the car. This keeps them out of the way and, should a jack stand fail, will prevent the car from dropping right to the floor and squishing you like a bug.

Cheers
DD

I use ramps BUT I don't drive up them I use the floor jack to raise the car then put the ramps under the wheels lower the jack, remove the jack...with four ramps you can do a quick and tidy job of elevating the car on all four corners and leave plenty of space under for maneuvering.

I will Absolutely tell the banker about this!!
He has mentioned more than once he wished he had built a place for a lift.

Thank you so much!

We jack up my Xj6 because the tail is so long it drags before the front tires are in the wells.

We use ramps for the Wart (Windstar).

But just as soon as The Banker returns from the Post Office I'm showing him the lift that WhiteXKR posted about!

When I retired I promised myself a ramp, and the Finance Director signed it off. After decades of lying under cars getting grit in my eyes, it was wonderful. They best £2000 I have ever spent. And as I fix our other cars as well, and thus save the huge hourly rates and daylight-robbery-parts-costs that French garages charge, we must be ahead by now.

Do it, say I, you will never regret it.

Default There must be an easy way to do this but .....

...... how do you jack up your XJS to put it up on jack stands?

I can't find a firm piece of frame to set the jack on. I want to put the jack stand in the designated "jacking" location.

I'd go for a MaxJax if you can afford it.

If not, these are a great piece of kit - hydraulic car ramps. They work great. And if you need to remove a wheel, you jack the car up on the ramps, put axle stand under one side, then lower the ramp on that side.
