Hi Sardonicus

A Reading on the Coolant Temperature Sensor of 4.0 is good

Its only if you get no reading on the Coolant Temperature Sensor that its bad

Hi Sardonicus

More about 'The Dreaded White Shielding Wire' that Doug was referring to

'The Dreaded White Shielding Wire' as seen in this Photo is very similar to the Coax Cable you find on TV Aerials and in fact its exactly the same! and you could even use a length of TV Aerial Coax Cable to replace it if you had to

Where to Test the Continuity you could even run a length of TV Coax Cable from where it connects under the Bonnet/Hood all around the Outside of the Car and then into the Boot/Trunk where it Connects to PIN 24 of the ECU

The Inner Core carries the Signal and the Outside Coax Shield Bit is the Earth

You can't use any Old Wire for this, it has to be Coax

As said before this Coax goes from where it joins under the Bonnet/Hood as in the Photo to Pin 24 of the ECU in the Boot/Trunk

BUT IT IS ONLY GROUNDED AT THE ECU END AND NOT 'REPEAT NOT!' AT BOTH ENDS

The Signal from this 'Dreaded White Wire' is used to Carry the Signal to the Injectors and if there's a break in this Wiring, more likely than not its usually at the Bonnet/Hood end

So have a good look and then see if you can see where it is Broken or has been disturbed in some way

Or like I say you could always duplicate the Set up by running a length of Coax round the outside of the Car so you can Test it if you cannot find the break

I'm with Doug in thinking that this could be the answer to the problem

considering the horrifying manner in which the wires have been assembled at the amp by the previous owner it is absolutely possible that this wire was futz with in the process of everything i've done. Could you post a picture closer up of how its meant to be wired at the amp so when I check on this tomorrow I have something to duplicate?

Yes, there's a 'trigger' wire from the amp to the ECU. Without that signal the ECU doesn't even know the engine is spinning on the starter

Here's a diagram of the amplifier innards

Hi Sardonicus

That would be pretty impossible at the moment, as the Car has been Covered up and Hunkered down for the Winter but just look for the Black Joiner by the side of the 'B' Bank Air Intake

You should see in the Photo there is only the Inner Core of the Shielded Coax coming out of that Joiner, as remember it doesn't get earthed at this end only at the ECU end maybe they call it 'The Dreaded Shielding Wire' because it can be a little bit hard to find

'The Dreaded Coax Shielding Wire' Hard to find so look for the Pull apart Joiner

So right now that wire is connected to a black wire, and a white and gray wire. Looks like the black wire is in a loom along side the shielded wire and the white and gray wire is coming out of the amp.

I'll take a look at my wiring tomorrow.

What you're describing doesn't sound quite right but I'll double check.

You'd think I woulda had this memorized after all these years !

So, I am just going to say that you people are saints for sticking with me for this insanity.

The car runs right now.

Heres what I believe happened. The wiring for the amplifier is not good, the previous owner just twisted things together and hoped for the best and added their own stuff to the mix and its incredibly frustrating in general. I believe that in the process of freeing up the old loom I messed up some of the twisted together connections around the amplifier and as soon as I noticed them I just put them back the way i thought they were and put it out of my mind. I was wrong wrong wrong. The black wire I mentioned in the previous post that was twisted together with the shielded wire and the white and gray from the amplifier is a GROUND. Sooooo that shielded wire was grounded all the time.

After reading peoples posts about how this shielded wire can't be grounded at the amp I decided in one last effort for the night to go out with my meter and check for continuity between those twisted together wires and ground. Sure enough my meter beeped. So I took them apart and checked each wire individually and the shielded wire didn't beep, but the black one did. So I put things back together without the black wire, turned the key and like magic the old girl fires right up. The idle was quite high but i suspect vacuum leaks galore so thats a problem for another day. I consider it quite a victory that the new injector loom works - while not particularly complicated to build it was quite the project and im glad to see it functioning after all that work.

Thank you all for sticking with me through this, it has been a maddening problem to sort out. Tomorrow I will set about on the task of making some new wires and connectors for the amplifier wiring so things there are neater and more secure.

Good for you Sardonicus! The big thing is that YOU stuck with it. Really well done. Believe me, as Dog said, we have all been there.

Sardonic

Congrats! Great result, I bet you're feeling good today!

And the great thing is that you looked at it logically and didn't just start replacing parts for the sake of it, as so many do without establishing if they really are at fault!

Enjoy the (expected!) drive today!

Cheers

Paul
