Starts, but dies when key is released
Hi, I'm new to Jags, just bought a 1989 XJS, has been starting okay but now it will start okay but when I release the key to run, the engine dies. Maybe a relay stuck?? The engine will run as long as the key is on start (#3) but on #2 it dies, I know this is hard on the starter so I turn it off right away.
Any help for this newbie will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dick C.

I susect a problem with th ignition swich itself.
The switch is easily removed from the rear of the key lock and can be carefully opened up for inspection and, often, DIY repair. (Watch for little parts flying abou when you open it up)
To verify that the switch it at fault use a small jumper wire to jump the solid brown wire at the back of the switch to the solid white wire at the back of the switch. This supplies 12v to the ignition and fuel injection circuits
Cheers

I'll check my manual to see how to take it out.

Could it be the coolant temp sensor? This might be worth a try...
1. Make sure the coolant temp sensor is plugged in firmly.
2. If it is, could be the sensor has died. Unplug the sensor and stick a piece of wire into the connections on the cable, essentially shorting it out. If that was the issue, it should start, and continue to run, after you've released the key from the ignition position.
Good luck with it!

I will certainly try that first John, I have a lot to learn about the car, only had it a week. Was running and starting good, next minute not. I have another ignition switch that came with a box of parts so will try it next.
Thanks,
