Default Steering lock up

I know there have been quite a few steering threads recently, but I didn't want to hijack one.

I've been having an issue for a few months now I haven't look into, so I thought I would see if anyone had experienced it so I had an idea when I start poking around

At low speeds, my steering totally jams up (sometimes) after turning the wheel about 1/3 of the way to the left. It does not happen while turning right and it is much more likely to happen at lower speeds.

It feels like its the exact same spot and its a pretty hard jam. I can't really power through it, I typically back off 20 degrees and retry.

So far its not a big issue but im concerned its going to happen at a bad time and cause an accident at some point. Any idea what this is? Doesn't seem like rack bushings would create such a specific problem spot.

I thought may it was a UJ or rag joint, but at first glance it looks like the steering column goes directly to the rack.

A u-joint failing sounds plausible to me; worth checking, at least?

There are two, items #1 and #4 in the pic

Ah okay. Like I said that was my first thought too but you can't see much of anything without removing stuff (we all know that deal on the XJS).
Looks like there is one inside and out outside? Hopefully I can just pull the air filter box and check out the outside one, wouldn't be surprised if the exhaust fried it.
