Steering Wheel Adjustment 1989 XJS
I inherited my dad's Jaguar that he purchased new. I remember when I would drive the car there was a lot of play in the steering column, the column would move in and out if you pulled hard on the wheel. I remember that the black hub used to tighten and untighten the movement of the spline in and out then it stopped moving. I am installing a nice new Nardi steering wheel so I had to take apart the upper steering wheel column to clean it, grease it, fix the play and fix the adjustment the black knob. Attached are pictures of the steering assembly I have in my car. Here are a few of the issues I found as to why there was so much play in the steering column. The black plastic ring with the two **** on it was not fully inserted into the white plastic ring built into the turn signal support bracket mounted on the lower spline and the black plastic tightening ring was cracked and broken (i have seen this part broken on several rings people are trying to sell online). I purchased a new turn signal switch with the mounting bracket and a new windscreen wiper arm assembly. I started to put the steering wheel assembly back together I could not get the black machined tightening hub with the two **** into the white plastic housing in the turn signal support system with the two slott sitting over a thin metal housing covering the lower spline. Is the white plastic ring with two holes made to go over the metal housing covering the lower spline or just sit at the end of the lower spline? I used a wedge to open the tightening ring to fit it into the two white plastic slotts and tightening the black hub ring and titend the set screw into the slott on the upper spline for movement of the steering. The upper spline could not slide in and out because it was attached to the lower spline with a set screw. When I went to install the upper parts of the steering column there was not enough room to install the bolts, split ring, washers, rubber ring and steering wheel. Is the center unit with the locking ring supposed to turn to loosen and tighten the adjustment of the length of the upper spline? Large black tightening hub to adjust the movement of the wheel in and out and get more room to install the bolts, split ring, washers, rubber ring and steering wheel? How do you get the center part of the hub out to make the adjustments needed?
