Telescoping steering column 1978 XJ-S
I'm assuming there is supposed to be a way of locking the telescoping steering column on my '78 XJ-S?
The steering wheel moves freely fore and aft a few inches.
I'm assuming the large plastic black knurled hub behind the wheel and around the column is what's supposed to lock the wheel into position but does not seem to have any impact; it's difficult to rotate but I can with some force but does not accomplish anything.
1. Correct that telescoping column should able to be locked into a position?
2. Proper procedure?
Thanks,
Steve

1. Yes
2. viewed from the driver's seat, turn the collar (the black hub thing) counterclockwise to loosen, adjust height, turn collar clockwise to tighten.
