Sticking tranny dipstick
The only reason I can think of that would cause it to be stuck is if the tube was bent for some reason? There isn't much room between the tube and the firewall, but see if you can see past it with a flashlight.
I am assuming on the 4ltr in the XJ-S it is on the LH side, just adjacent to the engine dipstick, like in my AJ16 (X300)??.
If so I would think it is probably just "stuck" on the o/ring seal that is just under the plastic bit you actually grab hold of.
It also may be that it has NOT been extracted for a looooong time and is also just "stuck".
There is NO clip, or special technique to removing it that I know of.

Or, just dribble some trans fluid around the top bit, and it should soak thru and lube the thing, this allowing extraction.
My V12 is a MONGREL at times, and access is ZERO, so a long hook wire, and pull like hell. One day that red plastic is going to break, so be it. I lube that thing every time it goes back, but it still sticks on the 2 o/rings. It dont leak ATF, so I dont dip it too often.
