Default Sun Visor compatibility

Not having been around enough of these cars to tell the difference, I'm wondering if the basic shape of the visors has remained a constant through various model years.

I've got a 1996, and for some idiot reason Jaguar saw fit to upholster the visors in cloth, which has nearly disintegrated.

I can't find matching visors, and even if I could I don't like the cloth. I'd prefer to have vinyl or leather.

I could use aftermarket units, but many of them are too large, and upholstering the visors I've got would be a bit expensive for what they are.

It's possible to simply remove the cloth and go with what's underneath, but that's a one-shot job, and I don't know exactly what's down there.

Does anyone know how much the mountings of these have changed over the years? Will different models bolt in and line up with the clips that don't seem to line up properly anyway?

Heck, do I even have the right visors installed?

Kennith,

I don't have an answer to all your questions but I can tell you what I've got in mine.
The visors are leather (same color as the dash, Barley, and a different color from the seats and doors, Parchment) and both driver's side and passenger's side have lighted vanity mirrors.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Cheers,

Allan

they can be split into 2 halves which make them recoverable, I purchased these new from jaguar classic parts they didn't have a colour matched pair and I had them covered in leather by a local trimmer, the pre-facelift visors only have 2 fixing screws and no lights as opposed to 3 in the later ones and lights the power is taken from the original interior light which was removed to fit a satnav in that position, the power dipping mirror needed a feed from the panel lights run in

I fitted some with the lights on my ,92 MY. Bit of a job but I ordered the wiring loom from the breakers as well, Had to enlarge a couple of holes but it went well and looks good. My interior is all doeskin....

Still need to sort out the speed control, rear side window, and other small jobs...etc

You might not, looking at some photos online of other 96's, the visors look very much like mine, no cloth at all.

Could you post a photo of your visors?

Cheers,

Allan

My visor's are cloth with lights. 3 way switch for the lights turns on for map light, door open light or off altogether. My interior is coffee and you can see my exterior color.

I have had two 96's.

Both were cloth.

Interesting, I looked at the parts list and its seems that there were 3 types of the same sun visor. Autolux leather, Ambla and cloth.

It appears the cloth were not introduced until VIN 199088 which I'm guessing is about halfway through MY95? I wonder why Jag bothered to change them as there was maybe only 1 year of production left? Perhaps they used them on the XK8?

Cheers,

Allan

Since the top was damaged recently, so water found it's way onto the driver side visor. That gave me an excuse to rip the fabric off.

I don't have the car with me now, as it's off waiting for a new top, but it sure looked like the visors split into two pieces, as was said. I didn't mess about with it at that time, though.

If that's the case, it shouldn't be too much of a big deal to cover them. By the time I buy the materials, set it all up, and spend the time doing it, it may have been more efficient to let the shop cover them.

I'd certainly rather have vinyl, and if they pop open as suggested, I'd rather have great new upholstery than good used visors.

I have this exact same issue. The cloth on my visors are disintegrating and the brackets to hold the visor are also broken so the visors won't stay up.

anyone know of where to go for the visor brackets?

If you look around in a wrecking yard you can likely find some mounting brackets that will work. I modified some chrome ones from a Ford Aerostar to fit my '87. It worked out quite well.

There was a question regarding brackets earlier. The solution was to fill the inside of the bracket with epoxy.
Worked great with mine!
