Question Tires for 86 XJS

Hey guys

I have an 86 XJSC. I believe from searching around that the stock tires were 215/70/VR15. My spare validates this as it is a Pirelli P5.

Question is will any 215/70/R15 work as a replacement tire?

Thanks!

Sure.

But finding a 215/70x15 with a "V" speed rating is almost impossible though. Standard 215/70s will feel a bit soft in the steering by comparison.

If your laws are the same as in the UK, you might wanna check with your insurance company about using standard tire to replace the "V" rated ones. Here in the 'States they don't care.

If you want something resembling a performance-oriented tire, look at 225/60s or 215/65s.

Regardless of speed rating, make sure you get the proper *load* rating.

Cheers

Thanks Doug. The car has Pirelli P4000 215/65/R15 95H on it right now. Not sure I like the feel of them. If I read right, the speed rating is a bit low. Not sure what the load index these cars need is. Am I correct in assuming that anything over 1000lbs (index 81) is ok?

You want something along the lines of 97 or 98 load rating.

Default How about P6s?

The local tire guys tell me they can get the P6 215/65/R15 96H in for almost half the price of the P4000.

Will the P6s work?
Is anyone else rolling on a stock rim tire that that they can recommmend?

Thanks
B-Stone

Oops...apparently they can't get the Pirelli P6 in the 65 range.

Now I am looking at P6 215/60/R15 94H.

Hi,
I encountered the same problem and took advantage of the situation to upgrade to 16 inch lattice wheels. Now I have 215/65/16 tyres on with V or W speed index.
BTW, are you already member of the XJSC-register ? If not please sign in !!
best regards, D

Hang on....Walmart has Nexen N5000 in 215/65 R15. They are H rated and about 94 load I think.

Cheap cheap and the reviews are generally favourable.

i just bought some Falken Ziex 912s and so they are great. I got 4 for 300 bucks and they have great tread and run well so far.
I just got my car and im low on funds but these are great. 225/60/15 look great on my wires and they are H rated.

id love some 235s like are supposed to be on it and id like them to be V rated but that combo is expensive.

to me 70s look way to big and bulgy.

also don't buy nexens at walmart, get a name brand.

id like to put dunlops on mine but i guess its okay because sumitomo owns falken and dunlop XD

I'm not sure what can be reliably concluded from changes in corporate ownership. If Sumitomo bought Falken and Dunlop it doesn't necessarily make Falken and Dunlop a better tire... or worse tire. Hard to tell. Next week or next year there might be yet another new owner.

oh yeah i know, I just meant I wanted dunlops on it but i don't care as much because the same standards should be enforced higher up.
It doesn't really matter to me, just felt like mentioning it.

Im sure the pirelli p4s are great and the car did originall have 5s on it but they are too expensive for me...

My two cents is stick with the P4000. They're what the later model XJS's came with and it is a touring car as opposed to a sports car so I go with the ride.

I would but good luck finding them. The place I go to called Pirelli and they said they don't have anymore left or something like that...

I went to 'Just Tires' and put on the Dunlop SP8000 235/60/R15 all around about 6 years ago. Car has been stored since and the rubber has not cracked and is still supple. Ride is nice and GT-like. I don't like the sidewall, however as it is more difficult to clean due to its "artistically-grooved" intricacies. Reasonably-priced/performance was the kicker here. Good luck!

Hi guys, the FAQ has just been updated with a Wheel and Tire Standard Fitment Guide.

Stay safe.

Thanks Doug, for making this available.

I've heard *but not confirmed* that Pirelli stopped production of the P4000 series. I think there are leftovers floating around out there, though, because I occassionally hear that someone has bought a set....

<shrug>

On the other hand....

I am not normally a cynical type but most tires stores like to sell what they have on the shelf. It is very easy to say "Those are out of production. However, we have these little babies right here in the back room...."

Cheers

I still run Pirelli P600s that are W rated on my XJ-SC. I intend to keep using the P600 as long as I can find them. Realizing it may not be the latest in tire technology they are factory correct for my '88 and have served me well in both high temperatures and wet conditions. I find them comfortable enough on the road as well if a tad noisy depending on the road surface.

Are you running the 235/60x15 P600s?
