Default Trans Mount Install

Hello all,

After removing my trans mount a couple months ago, I removed it again today as I’m convinced I assembled it incorrectly. Hear a loud thump sound when switching into reverse and I’m unable to bounce the tranny on the spring like I think you are supposed to be able to. Thing is I can’t see what I did wrong when referencing all the documentation on this. First on the spindle is the special washer which sits on the shoulder about an inch or so down on the spindle. Then the spring seat with the spring and poly bushing inside of it. Put the collar on the spindle and then the nut. Don’t have the collision bracket so seems like it should be straight forward. Did I get something wrong or is there a chance something else has gone awry?

Cheers

This illustrates the set up more or less. Should note the bushing (cotton reel) shown at top of spring should be inserted into the mount bracket not left where it is shown.

You do have to keep the large stepped washer and the tongue (or a cut down part of it) in place before the bottom nut goes on.

As said, that Poly, or the OE rubber, cotton reel is inserted IN the hole of the base assembly, FROM to top.

Read this write up, might clear the mud a tad.

Thanks all.

Any chance the trans can get jammed in the tunnel? Thumping in reverse and not being able to freely bounce it is surely indicative of a mount problem and not something else?

I saw Adam’s video and referred to Grants doco this go around. Don’t see a difference to how I got it set up. Poly bushing goes in the spring seat either way right?

With the collision bracket junk off this mount isn’t so complicated and I can’t see what is causing the above issues.

EDIT: Slow day at the office, here is a cartoon of how I got it setup lol

In your diagram the Tongue is the wrong way up. The domed part where the nut goes should be dome upward. If you have assembled your bracket as per the diagram, then tightening the nut will compress the entire thing togeterh and prevent the spring springing.

Thanks Greg, this is from memory and don't recall how I have it but I'll give that a check when I can.

Still curious if its possible for the trans to get 'stuck' in the tunnel. Gave it a solid push upwards when compressing the spring to remove it and it will stay in that pushed position instead of falling back down. Thought I remember the boy moving quite a bit up and down before.

Interesting: I have a 1994 XJS 4.0
question….how much vertical deflection is considered normal for 1994 4.0 ??

OK, been giving this some thoughts, and that is not as easy as it once was.

The trans stuck in the tunnel, Yeh-Nah, not going to happen, the weight of that trans and the attached engine, then gravity, NOPE..

The gist of my reply:

That mount unit is attached to the body by 4 bolts. there are spacers on I THINK the fronts, between the mount arms and the body. These spacers place the frame and trans pin, and a angle of "central". Aussie lingo, Angle of the Dangle. If that mount is attached WITHOUT those spacers, or on the wrong bolts, that A of D is up the creek, and that special washer and maybe the lower sleeve will BIND in the Cotton Reel, and you have what you have, a solid mount.
The centralising of that pin in the cotton reel, BEFORE the lower washer and nut are fitted should have given you a visual that the A of D was wrong.
I have been doing these for a good many years, back as far as the MK X, and never had what you describe. BUT, the assembly of the mount frame to the body is critical, as well explained in the Doco.

Cheers Grant. I gave it a redo this weekend and reassembled ensuring the spindle was centered in the bushing. Was able to bounce the trans with a couple threads on the lock nut like I remembered. Once tightening the lock nut so its flush with the spindle I could bounce it maybe a couple mm or so. Less than I remember but I wanted to be done with it. Put the car into reverse and it no longer gave a big thump so I'm calling it a success.

Thanks all for the guidance!
