Greetings everyone,
Along with following Grant's cooling system "sticky," I am also having the transmission filter and all fluids replaced. One issue has come up.
It seems the previous owner placed a 3 inch deep aluminium transmission pan on the XJS. The PO placed a longer (I think about six inches) oil pick up tube on the car. (see photo) Fine.
The questions I have deal with the spacer, pick up tube o-ring, and dip stick.
1. With a deeper pan, do you still use the same size spacer on the shoulder bolt?
I ask because my mechanic pointed out that the oil filter seemed to not fit properly when bolted, it didn't seem fix firmly but flopped about. He can make a longe spacer, but what is one supposed to normally do when they go down the path of placing a deeper pan on the car?
2. Is it advisable to place two o-rings on the pick up tube?
3. Does one need a different dip stick with a deeper pan? Just curious.
Many thanks,
Charles
The filter on a TH400 basically "floats" on top of the oil, hence the odd bolt. and loose feeling filter.
The deeper pan is to give MORE oil CAPICITY to the system. The same dipstick, as said, is used, and the oil is filled to the same mark, HOT engine running.
SOOOO, instead of 5 ltrs +/- at drain time, you may have 8 or more, that's all.
Pick up tube o/rings, ONE only, is all I have ever used, and the Viton Spec if you can find them.
