Transmission Leak

Transmission Leak
All,
I changed the transmission fluid and filter last year before I deployed and then the car sat for eight months until I got home. It started right up last week! I took it for a long drive (100 miles) after a few warm up trips. It was a hot day (110+ heat index here in Philly). The car seemed fine until I noticed a burning smell and could see smoke coming up underneath the car. It had transmission oil smell to it.
Anyway, I looked under the car and fluid is dripping onto the exhaust system. Does the car have an overflow port or valve? Maybe I put too much fluid in it an it is dumping the excess? Any thoughts before I jack her up...
Thanks,
Ray

I'm not aware of any auto trans that *doesn't* have a vent port of some kind...usually up high somewhere.
Broadly speaking I think you'd have to grossly over-fill the trans, or have a serious fluid overheating problem, for fluid to be ejected from the vent....but perhaps some transmission designs are more prone to such a thing than others <shrug>
Why not warm the car up and simply check the fluid level on the dipstick? That would answer the question of over-filling.
Cheers

You might want to look at a couple of places for a leak; the transmission cooler lines and the rear transmission seal right above the transmission mount in the middle of the car. Both are common leak spots in the 95/96 models.
