Washing the motor
I recently had the same dilemma....my solution was generic oven cleaner where there was excessive grease buildup....and a quick blast from a pressure hose. I left the car running the entire time...I made sure to stay away from direct jets at or near the Distributor or fuse housings. It actually worked and the water evaporated rather quickly with a nice warm engine.....but that was before I saw this post...safe to say I'll take the advice of more seasoned members and I probably wont be doing this again. good luck.
Add my "No way!" to the list :-)
Lots of rags, brushes, mild solvent, Simple Green, etc
A hand-trigger spray bottle, used carfully, is fine. But you don't want to do the garden hose or pressure wash routine.
You can get a lot done with job patience and elbos grease. Here's a pic of mine from back in the day
Cheers

I know I've said it before, macdoesit, but I'll say it again. Your car is gorgeous. I wouldn't care if I opened the hood and saw an honest, dirty, 23 yo engine. I would still call it a gorgeous car.
