Default What is air gap on Crankshaft position sensor??

I have heard there is a gap to be adjusted on CPS....would someone explain. ..my mechanic says the CPS only bolts up one way and there is no gap to adjust....
my car is 1994 XJS V12 6L.....I had an aftermarket BWD CPS installed and car won't start cold....I got a OE CPS from
Jag bits and will install tomorrow
Is it true that my car only has one CPS??

There is no adjustment. And depending on ignition system, it has none, one or two sensors. The Marelli (88.5 onwards) has two. One at the front and one at the rear.

air gap is the distance between the sensor tip and the teeth on the flywheel. This needs to be checked and is adjusted with shims and perhaps a new sensor if necessary. The gap can come out of spec due to stacking of manufacturing tolerances, defective parts or some other damage.

IF your 6.0l has a second one, it will be on the rear of the engine, left side around the bottom corner.

All Marelli V12's have 2 sensors, one under the damper on the front of the crank and one on the bottom of the transmission. Front one is TDC for A bank and rear one is engine speed.

Gap for both is a max of 0.042" any wider and it can cause no trigger for the ECU.

Can you hear the injectors fire when you crank the engine in a no start situation.

It might be the flywheel sensor (also known as the rear crank sensor). When mine went bad, the car did not start. Replaced it and all was good.
