I am cleaning up my precious 1990 XJS V12 and would like some suggestions. So far I have changed the brakes, brake discs, handbrakes, rebuilt the calipers, frushed the brake fluid, replaced the differential fluid, replaced the transmission fluid and filter / gasket, replaced the oil and filter, flushed the coolant, and lubricated all of the grease fittings that I could find.

So what else to do? Maybe change the gas filter?

Later plans are to clean up the pin striping (hand done), touch up the small number of rock chips, and detail the engine and paint.

Purchase a large spray can of electrical parts cleaner, then go find your toothbrush. Clean out ALL sockets in the engine. especially resistor packs and grounds...actually add another ground wire from the engine to the body, I did mine from alternator mount bracket.

Go to Wal Mart and find Chevron Techron concentrate fuel cleaner...purchase a liberal number of bottles and use them all, then swap out filters including cleaning out the swirl tank under the battery, and order a new filter sock for that aswell if fitted to your car.

Then research Archoil 9100 oil friction modifier and AR6200 fuel combustion modifier, you won't regret it. Expect large reductions in heat/friction damage and a much much cleaner burning fuel.


If you want to fully de-rust the inside of your cooling system I'd dump a gallon of Metal Rescue in run for a week then have it flushed professionally..or use a shop vac like I do.

Also doesnt hurt to remove a vac line both sides (one at a time) and dumb Seafoam or similar degreaser in to clear the **** out of the intake manifolds. Can go a step further and buy K&N performance filters to.

I would add to the mix FIRST and foremost.

Fuel hoses, ALL of them, especially the 2 above the rear cradle, oops.

Coolant hoses, ALL of them.

 

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I do drive the car but not a lot. Probably should do more. I checked and these look good: few hoses (outside and inside), Engine mounts, Rear subframe bushings, Radius Arm bushings, Transmission mount spring assembly, I have used Techron liberally recently, coolant hoses are also good in and out, and rubber suspension parts are all good - no dry rot.

I will change the power steering fluid, upgraded the steering bushes, clean out ALL sockets in the engine. especially resistor packs and grounds...actually add another ground wire from the engine to the body.

I added these to the list of items to do.
