Question What is my XJS Engine worth?

I'm brand new to all this and I know you have lots of rules. I'm hoping somebody can help me because I am naive about the value here. I have a beautiful red convertible 1989 Jag XJS. I dropped a valve on the engine. I will be putting in a Chevy 350 small block, later. Meanwhile, I will need to sell the Jag core engine 12c complete with excellent tranny. Only 37,000 original miles. Any ideas on what it's worth? I just don't know what to ask for. This isn't a classified ad, but an attempt to get somebody knowledgeable to tell me what someone might buy the engine for. I'll list it elsewhere and later. I want to get a good price so I can get the Chevy engine. What's it worth? Please help. Respond here or at RogerCG1@aol.com PLEASE help. Thanks much!! Roger

I'm going to take a stab at this.

1. The (shot) engine.

If you could get someone to take it for free, I would take that offer. I don't think that there is anyone who will offer much for a cooked engine.

You might be able to sell off some of the electrical components.

2. The tranny, same thing.

I would post these items under the "For Sale By Owner" section and see what happens.

In the meantime, troll around Craigslist. You know, do the Craigslist search around the country. You'll be surprised at how many people are selling these parts. Many have been selling for a long long time.

There is one guy that has been posting a V12 and tranny for over a year with no takers. $1,200.

Jaguar V12 XJS Engine and trans

Apparently it only had 1,000 miles on it when something happened to the car.

That should help put things in perspective?

A low mileage car in beautiful condition,is it worth investigating what damage has been done to the engine?
I am sure the car would be worth far more with the original engine and as it would seem it has little re-sale value the money spent on the Chev conversion might get it repaired.
Plus a Brownie Point from the Save a Jag Group.

Default Selling the V-12

Last fall, I came across a man 100km from home who had done a 350GM swap simply because nobody in his town would work on it. -112,000km(about 75,000mi). He originally wanted $2000.00 for the complete take-out, with TH400, driveshaft, all exhaust, radiator and shroud, almost all wiring harness and hoses. He slowly dropped his price, and Bottom-Line, I ended up buying everything for $500.00 I don't regret my purchase, as any couple accessory items like starter, alternator, PS Pump, Radiator etc, would run me my investment. -
Your gear is worth what somebody will pay you, but being a "broken" engine, really cuts your upper hand.
Good Luck

the car would generally be worth more with a Jag engine in it. As mentioned, things are only worth what people are willing to pay for it.

For the amount of money it will cost you to convert it to a chevy engine and transmission, you should be able to locate a reasonably priced used v12. If you are mechanically able, you could repair the original engine for a little more money than the used v12.

I just bought an 83 with a running motor but rusted out floors for a little more than the price of scrap.

Would be far easier and cheaper to repair your engine, or buy a used V12 (properly maintained), than to do the conversion. Good luck!
