What tires are you using?
Hi all,
I took my baby in to have the wheels rebalanced and was told they couldn't because the tires were 12 years old. The steering wheel shakes pretty badly above 65 but I'm pretty sure they're flat spotted from sitting so much so time for new tires. What do ya'll have and are you happy with them? Are any of you running non V-W-Y-Z rated tires?

Your XJS should have 16" wheels so you still have some good choices.....as opposed to owners of older XJSs having 15" wheels.
What attributes in a tire are most important to you? That's the first step in making a decision.
If you're not particularly concerned about high speed driving, steering response, cornering traction and such you don't need a tire with the higher speed ratings.....as the higher speed ratings usually come with performance oriented tires.
However, do not compromise on *load rating*.
Having said that I've had great luck with the BF Goodrich Advantage T/A. I'm on my second set. Not a true high performance tire but they do have a "V" speed rating, great wet and dry traction, totally quiet, and 40000+ mile tread life. My only complaint is that they're a tad bit soft on steering response.
Cheers

Hi Doug,
I'm looking for steering response and quietness first and comfort 2nd. I'll have to take a look at the tires you mentioned. I've been to 5 tire stores, gotten quotes for 3-4 tires at each store and not one store has quoted me for the same tire... makes it hard to compare prices and performance characteristics. I admit I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choices.

Tire stores often suggest (and tout as best) what they actually have on-the-shelf (for obvious reasons) rather than what the customer really wants or needs
Go to Tire Rack (I think it's tirerack.com) and then "search by size". I think you'll want 225/60x16. If you search V-rated or higher (under the presumption that the results will be more performance oriented) you'll a dozen or so choices.
Cheers

12 year old tires are bad tires. Thats way to much ozone and UV exposure, regardless of miles put on them.
I have pretty cheap tires because I am a poor college kid, but they are still great tires.
I have wires, which the tire place had a hard time mounting.
I have Falken Ziex912s 225/60r15 96H
they have pretty good wet weather abilities for what they are, they are wearing well so far and they are a good inbetween of comfort and grip. I ended up paying 85 bucks a piece of them, which I can complain about at all. I would like Vs but the H rating was all i could afford
they look good too! I would recommend to ANY XJS owner to get 60rs, the OE tire size look like stupid monster truck tires.

Tyler,
I put on a set of Continental Extreme Contact 225/55ZR 16's earlier this year. They are excellent performance tires and actually fairly quiet. Have about 3,000 miles on them now and very pleased.
Great pricing too, I think I got them for about $350 for the whole set.
Cheers,
Allan

Generally the shorter sidewalls of the 55-series tires will be stiffer than a 60-series, which are shorter and stiffer than a 70-series, etc.
But.... 55-series vs 60-series isn't a huge leap. You may or may not feel much difference depending on brand-to-brand differences in design and construction.
Your speedo will read slighty faster with the shorter tire

Very useful as you get a good gneral idea of what the approximate speedo error will be.
I say "approximate" because tire manufacturers don't build identically-sized tires. In other words a Goodyear 225/60x16 might be taller and wider than a Michelen 225/60x16 but shorter and narrower than a Pirelli 225/60x16. A half inch variance in diameter, for example, from brand to brand isn't unusual. If there's any industry standard for tire dimensions it is applied very loosely

Tires?
Lemme see...XJS? Jaguar? AAHHH! Pirelli! 235/60/15, Tire Rack! $260. each. That's the PROPER tire for the car. I mean you wouldn't put a bumper from a FORD on your jaguar, right? Then why not the proper tire? That word PROPER has an english twinge to it don't you think? Proper, proper. I say, that, that's a proper tire old chap! You can boast that you dropped a thou on the tires alone. Bud

The Michelins are a nice tire too, a bit cushier than the Conti's.
How much were they per tire? Tirerack has the Conti's for $89 per tire which I think is a pretty geed deal.

235s are expensive for some of us and 215 is too small...so 225 is a good performance/balance.
