Default why no fuel to fuel rail, 1988 XJS?

Car ran several weeks ago before I took it apart to fix the bad gas leak from around the lower tank sending unit..

With IGN on, the pumps run, then stop after few seconds after (I assume) pressure is built up in the fuel line.

I opened the feed line where it goes into the fuel rail on the LH side.

No gas flow there, even with pump pressurized/and or running.

Is there something I am missing?

Thanks,
Doug

I had the fuel pump out a few weeks ago to replace a leaking hose at the pump.

The fuel inlet to the rail is on the RH side. Not LH. Crack the line open there and see if you have fuel

The pump circuit is ECU controlled. It'll run the pump 2-3 with the key turned on and when the starter is engaged. And, of course, with the engine running. Fuel pressure doesn't not into play WRT the pump circuit.

Anyhow, if still no fuel at the rail, maybe your pump is spinning but not actually pumping?

Cheers
DD

I will look again in the morning. The connection to the fuel "U" rail that I loosened was on the LH side about 2/3 of the way back.

maybe thats the return line.

Looking at a pic i took a while back, I see a similar flare type nut connection on the RH side about a 1/3 of the way back, and also a hose connected directly to the front of the RH side of the rail

The fuel pump in the car is NOT original (see pic), I do not know if there was an anti drain back valve/check valve in the original pump, or in the fuel line to the motor.

There was no anti drain back valve on the pump that I could see when it was out. Not sure if the air in the line is keeping fuel out and any attempt to pressurize it goes away as soon as key is off, if no drain back valve..

Fuel pressure TO the engine is the RHS.
Return FROM the engine is the LHS, as the Sage of Seattle Doug said.

You wrote: "Looking at a pic i took a while back, I see a similar flare type nut connection on the RH side about a 1/3 of the way back, and also a hose connected directly to the front of the RH side of the rail" This is the pressure feed to the injector rail.
Test for fuel feed to the join just BEFORE the RHS pressure regulator.

Further suggestions to follow once you post the result.

I would officially like to nominate myself self for dumbass of the year candidate.

I had the polarity to the pump backwards....

Lots of fuel to motor, now.
