Default Wiper motor plug No Power

I have two XJSs, a'86 and an '87, with the same problem, no power at the wiper motor plug, 8 pin connector.

I just came across some old posts thru google on this issue from MrAndersonGCC and Greg in France from four years ago but I couldn't see from the thread if the problem was ever resolved.
I am wondering if there is also some kind of relay in the wiper switch circuit. I am told there is a round red overload relay somewhere in there but I can't find anything under the dash looking like that.

In the thread they are talking about the different fuse ratings between English and American/Everybody else. Obviously incorrect fuses could be an issue. The fuse panel cover lists each position with the correct fuse. Should I consider all of these to be the English rating? Apparently there is a conversion chart.

Final note: I also have an '89 with ABS. The pump wasn't working, needed to the brake bleeding process. Naturally I checked and replaced all the fuses. Still no joy. Not until we were able to find a large square yellow relay behind the glove box and swap it out id I have power to the ABS pump. My thinking is that the wiper motor issue might be similar.

Both of these cars have the old style glass bulb fuses. They switched over to the clip in style in '88 IIRC. Would the same listed fuse rating apply for those cars as well?

Brad,

I understand that the fuse cover fuse ratings were standard on all the cars, irrespective of whether they were exported to the US. So the ratings would be the older Lucas, instant blow, rating rather than the US, continuous current type. As regards conversions, this is broadly the conversion:

Lucas Fuse Rating (UK, Instant Blow) - US, Continuous Current
50 amp - 30 amp
35 amp - 20 or 25 amp
30 amp - 15 or 20 amp
25 amp - 15 amp
20 amp - 10 amp

Hope that helps a bit

Paul

There is no relay; but there is a wiper delay unit, under the passenger side shin trim, on the RHS of the horizontal relay steel chassis. The attached is the circuit diagram.

Thanks. I am going to replace all my fuses with US standards to re-set the baseline before I go chasing gremlins again.
