Wiper parking
I have a weird problem on my 89 XJS.
When the wiper motor is in the park position and then turned on, they turn to the right briefly and then turn back left. So, when the wiper arm is attached to the shaft and positioned at the bottom of the windshield out of the line of sight, it has the effect of driving the wiper arm into the body work. Ask me how I know...
So, take a look at this video, when wipers are off and in home position they go down and then sweep back to the left.

Remove the wiper mechanism and check if it is the Lucas (wheelboxes) or Electrolux (lever operated) system. Your problem is the parking mechanism is stopping the motor before the wiper arms have reached the end of their normal arc of travel, rather than at the end of their arc of travel as they should be doing. When you start them again, they finish their normal travel. Depending on the type of mechanism you have, the cure will be different.

I cannot give you a step by step as my Electrolux is not accessible for a few weeks as I am concreting my garage floor. However, the principle is pretty simple, and if you carefully take the drive apart you should see what to do.

- The turning motion of the motor gets converted to a reciprocal motion by the first lever, if you rig up the thing off car and power it (wiper arms off!) you will see how this works.
- When you switch off there is a delaying switch that gets activated to only cut in at the correct point (ie the first lever position which corresponds to the end of the wiper arm arc).
- This switch needs to be found (almost certainly somewhere between the motor spindle and the lever) because it is cutting in too early. You may find it can be adjusted or unbolted and repositioned somehow. You may even find you can reposition the first lever on the motor spindle so as to co-incide the stop position with the end of the arc, so that as the motor turns on startup the lever is in fact starting to move the arm in the other direction. The thing to remember is that the motor is only turning in one direction, so it is a positioning problem only, that you have to solve!

Discovered the problem. Some idiot owner (me) attached the linkage arm mechanism on the motor shaft out of position. I took the whole thing apart to reglue a magnet that had fallen off inside of motor (easy fix) and then cleaned and lubed the linkage.
Did what you said, turned cowl piece upside down, took off linkage at motor shaft, turned on motor at inside switch and then turned off. At that natural stopping point reconnected the linkage in correct orientation so that it started sweeping back left immediately.
