Default Wire Wheel Questions

Wire Wheel Questions

The car has 15" 70 spoke Dayton wire wheels.

Background

One evening the car died and required a flat bed transport. The driver did not have a flashlight and had trouble finding the hook up points. I found the front ones which he used. He could not find the rear ones so he used a tire strap on one wheel. It was not an around the entire thread strap. It was around the tread a one point for the width of the strap only and then attached to the truck.

Problem

Shortly after this the tire went flat. The car was brought to the shop (took weeks to get it in) for the other repairs and the tire went flat on them. They sent the wheel to a place who installed an inner tube. That seem to last for some time until recently. Now the tire continually goes flat.

My assumption is that the spokes were dislodged and lost the seal. Then the inner tube was eventually punctured by the movement of the spokes. Am I close on this assumption ?

Questions

What is the Problem and what is the Solution ? Could the transport been the cause of the damage ?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If the tyre went flat with a tube fitted, then something probably punctured it (providing the valve is OK).

Have you dunked the inflated wheel in a water bath to see where the air is leaking from?

When you have done this you will have a better idea as to whether you have a penetrative puncture caused by a nail or some such or if it is an internal problem.

Now when you have the tyre off you need to closely examine the interior for protruding nail points which might not be visible from the outside, use your eyes and fingers for this.

You would then examine the wheel itself for any protruding spoke heads, rusty sharp areas etc. Check for any loose spokes this might point you in the right direction. There should also be a rubber type band around the rim, between the rim and the tube to protect the tube.

If you don't find anything untoward, you might want to try swapping your spare tyre complete with repaired tube, onto this rim. If it goes flat, there is most probably a problem with the rim. If it remains inflated then you have a problem with the removed original tyre.

IMHO, it is unlikely that the bungee strap caused this problem, if the tyre was inflated when it was tightened.

You might get a better result by taking your wheels to a good motorcycle shop. They will have more experience with dealing with spoked rims.

All the best,

It sounds like you have a piece missing. Normally with wire wheels, there is a flat circular piece of rubber that fits around the inside of the wheel covering the spoke nuts. The tube presses against this and the tyre and thus prevents damage from the spoke nuts.

From them

From just looking at the wheel Iam guessing its a Jaguar, XJ6? These wheels have to be prepped for a tube or they will damage a tube. The wheel also has to be prepped for a inner tube. Also the standard 15 inch tube is too big for a wire wheel. Wire wheels like this dish in more than a standard wheel and require a 14/15 tube. The too large a tube will fold over on the inside and crease causing a flat. you then have to put a layer of special PVC tape on inside of rim to protect the tube from the nipples. WE HAVE THIS) We have the right tubes and can make this run right. Cost is... $75.00 for dismount tire, prep wheel and tire for tube, remove lables from tire and wheel ,dust tire on inside with talc, mount back with a KR14/15 rally tube, shave true the tire, retrue the wheel and high speed balance. The tubes are $27.50 each and a chrome wheel wieght can be used on the outside of rim for $5.00 more. Sooo you are looking at a little over $100.00 to make it right ,, plus shipping back. We do this ALL the time for the older bolt on tubeless wheels that have lost their seal.

Exactly, looks good, especially if they are able to balance as well.

If you do use them and have satisfactory results be sure to post up the conclusion.

All the best.
